Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has come out in defense of goalkeeper teammate Andre Onana after he committed yet another mistake in the clash against Viktoria Plzen. The Reds registered a stunning come-from-behind win in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday (December 12) to win the match by a 2-1 margin. Andre Onana’s glaring mistake almost cost United the game as they conceded a goal in the 48th minute.

Thanks to Rasmus Hojlund, Manchester United managed to win the clash as he found the nets in the 62nd and 88th minute. Onana’s multiple blunders cost Manchester United the game against Nottingham Forest last weekend by a 3-2 margin. His mistakes would’ve cost them the Viktoria Plzen clash as well, only for Hojlund to come up with a brace and save the day for Manchester United.

Amidst concerns over Onana’s show recently, Bruno Fernandes has put his weight behind the goalkeeper.

“We want to play from the back and everyone knows that then we have to make the right decision on the pitch.

“Andre [Onana] thought that Matta [De Ligt] could get on the ball but he missed it and they scored a goal. It is not about Andre making the mistake, we don’t look at individuals here when something happens on the wrong side. We have huge belief in him."

“He knows he made a mistake because he is a clever guy, he is going to help us many times and we trust his qualities on the ball,” Fernandes told TNT Sports.

How have Manchester United performed in the UEFA Europa League?

Manchester United’s win over Viktoria Plzen came at the right time as they now stand in the seventh position with 12 points to their name. After six matches, the Reds have won three and drew as many so far this season in the tournament.

Ruben Amorim’s team will next be in action on Sunday (December 15) against Manchester City in the Premier League. Both teams are at the crucial juncture in the competition and it will be a test for the Reds as well. Moreover, City are also struggling for form having won only one match in their last 10 outings.
