Carlos Alcaraz, who had predicted a good Sunday for Spain after his semi-final win against Medvedev, watched the match anxiously, live-tweeting the game throughout. On July 14, Carlos Alcaraz won his second Wimbledon title in a row by dominating Novak Djokovic in the men's singles final. In this blog piece, we take a look at how the day went for Carlos Alcaraz and the Spain national football team.

Spain enjoys double delight as Carlos Alcaraz and the Spain national football team taste success

It was indeed a Super Sunday for Spain from a sporting point of view. The country first saw 21-year-old Carlos Alcaraz win a second consecutive title at Wimbledon by beating the best Tennis player, Novak Djokovic, for the second straight year in the finals of The Championships. Hours later, Carlos Alcaraz and the rest of Spain celebrated as the Spain national football team won their fourth UEFA European Championship title. Let's take a closer look at the two championship results.

1. Carlos Alcaraz stuns Novak Djokovic to clinch Wimbledon 2024 title

Carlos Alcaraz is the new king of the Centre Court, and Novak Djokovic, the mighty collector of Grand Slam titles, has been deposed. The baton has been passed, and the guard has been finally changed as Alcaraz defended his Wimbledon title with a masterclass and dismissed Djokovic 6-2, 6-2 7-6(4). Talking about the Tennis news, Carlos Alcaraz won the toss and chose to receive. The opening game took him 14 minutes, seven deuces, and five break points to break Djokovic. This set the tone for the match, and Djokovic could not recover from the early setback. In a rematch of last year's final, it took the youngster 2 hours and 27 minutes to win the match in front of a packed crowd.

Carlos Alcaraz was on top throughout the final at the All England Club, slipping only when he reached his first championship point, which allowed Novak Djokovic to push the third set into a tie-breaker. Alcaraz only appeared vulnerable when he served for the title at 40-0, where he missed three championship points and was broken. Minutes later in the tie-breaker, the fourth championship point arrived. Carlos Alcaraz smiled and served it out this time as Djokovic's backhand return crashed into the net. The Spaniard defeated the legendary Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) on Centre Court.

2. Late Oyarzabal winner helps Spain beat England in UEFA Euro 2024 final

Later on Super Sunday, Spain substitute Mikel Oyarzabal slid in for an 86th-minute winner to earn his team a 2-1 Euro 2024 final victory over England and a record fourth European Championship title. Oyarzabal finished off a break for the winning goal as the Spain national football team were crowned UEFA Euro 2024 champions, having won all seven games they played in the tournament. After a highly cautious first half where Spanish football players had more possession, and their opponents got only one shot on target, it took two minutes after the restart for the Spaniards to break the pressure. Young prodigy Lamine Yamal found space down the right and delivered an assist for Nico Williams to score before England, who levelled in the 73rd through substitute Cole Palmer.

Oyarzabal, however, denied them their first major international trophy in 58 years. La Roja was in excellent form in Germany, winning all seven games while scoring 15 goals and conceding only four. Winger Lamine Yamal made history by becoming the youngest player ever to appear at a Euro against Croatia as Spain made light work of a tough group that also included holders Italy. Yamal laid on an assist as Spain showed their mettle to overcome hosts Germany in extra time in the quarter-finals, and an even more prodigious goalscoring feat ensued in the semi-final with his match-turning equaliser. In Berlin, Spain overcame England to become the first side to win four Euro titles.
