Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has revealed that he was impressed with Lamine Yamal when he saw him play for the first time. The 17-year-old youngster has turned heads with his style of play as he enjoyed a breakout campaign last season. He has continued in the same vein this season as well stepping up for his team in almost every outing.
For the unversed, Yamal won the 2024 Kopa Trophy for his excellent performances for Barcelona and the Spain team during the 2023-24 season. He played 47 matches for La Roja last season in La Liga and UEFA Champions League combined, scoring five goals and providing assists in as many. For Spain, the winger was on top of his game scoring three goals in 11 matches and providing assists in four goals in the UEFA Euro Cup.
Coming back to Lewandowski, he was blown away after watching the teenager showcase his skills for the first time. He recalled watching Yamal play at the age of 15 and also revealed his reaction to the same.
“The first time I saw Lamine Yamal in training, he was 15 years old. I've seen a lot of talent in my life, but never like that: oh my God, it was amazing. How does he do that at that age? I swear it's impossible,” Lewandowski said, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Lewandoski and Yamal shines for Barcelona in ongoing season
Both Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal have led the resurgence of Barcelona this season in La Liga. The Polish player has so far netted a staggering 19 goals across competitions in 17 appearances. On the other hand, the Spaniard has scored six goals in 16 matches while providing assists in eight of them.
Thanks to their excellent show on the field, Barcelona are sitting pretty at the top of the table in the ongoing season of LaLiga. They have 33 points to show for their efforts after 13 matches with 11 wins and two losses and have a sizeable six-point lead over the second-placed Real Madrid who have one game in hand compared to their arch-rivals.
