Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is slowly and steadily approaching the 1000-goal milestone in his illustrious career. However, he will soon turn 40 and is at the fag end of his career. But he isn't thinking much about the milestone and wants to take it easy. Ronaldo got a step closer to the dream milestone after scoring a couple of goals in Portugal’s 5-1 win over Poland in the UEFA Nations League on November 15 (Friday) at the Estadio do Dragao.
He successfully converted a penalty in the 72nd minute first and then unfurled a bicycle kick three minutes before scheduled close of the match to extend the lead. Moreover, the 39-year-old also provided the assist for Pedro Neto’s goal in the 83rd minute. After two goals in this match, Cristiano Ronaldo now has 910 career goals and as expected, he was asked about the possibility of reaching 1000 goals before retiring.
He admitted that he wants to breach the barrier but cleared that he just wants to enjoy and not think about it much.
“I want to enjoy it day by day. This thing about 1,000 goals doesn't interest me at all, honestly. I want to enjoy it.
“It's normal to want to, but honestly I don't think about it. In three months I'll be 40, so I'll just take it easy and continue to enjoy it. Playing for the Portuguese national team is where I like to play the most, honestly. Coming here and scoring goals helps,” Ronaldo said (via @TimelineCR7 on X).
Portugal coach lauds Ronaldo’s mentality and attitude
After a stunning 5-1 win over Poland, Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez was delighted and also praised Ronaldo for his dedication to the sport. He was particularly impressed with the veteran player’s attitude and the way he trains even at this age after playing the sport for so many years.
He also reiterated the fact that Ronaldo is Portugal team’s leader while highlighting his commitment. At the international level, Ronaldo has now scored 135 goals for Portugal in 215 appearances across competitions while providing 45 assists as well.
