Five biggest defeats of all time for Chelsea in the Premier League

One of the Premier League behemoths, Chelsea have enjoyed success in English football across all competitions. The Stamford Bridge outfit has won competitions including UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, while also winning the Premier League and other domestic titles. However, they are also known for one more thing. Hiring and firing managers at their whims and fancies. While it was a predominant feature of Roman Abramovic's tenure as the boss, it has also continued to be part of Todd Boehly’s setup too

While Chelsea caught the attention with the wins, they have also struggled in the English top flight. Here are the top five biggest defeats of all time for Chelsea in the Premier League.

Five biggest defeats of all time for Chelsea in the Premier League:

1) Manchester City vs Chelsea, 6-0 (Etihad Stadium - 2018/19)

A season where Manchester City made it tough for the opposition to dream about the Premier League title, Chelsea were torn apart by them in the fixture in the middle of the season. Chelsea had a poor start to the campaign and they had already drifted out of the title race. And then, they faced Manchester City in their den in front of 54000 spectators.

The game was more or less decided in the first half when Manchester City players put four past the Blues. By the 25th minute, four goalscorers had their names on the scoresheet including Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, and Illkay Gundogan. In the second half, Sergio Aguero completed the hattrick and Raheem Sterling scored his second to complete the rout.

2) Arsenal vs Chelsea - 5-0, Emirates Stadium ( 2023/24)

What is drubbing? This question was answered for Chelsea when Arsenal inflicted a heavy defeat in the Premier League fixture in the previous season. The Gunners were chasing the title and they needed a win to keep their hopes alive. While Arsenal were chasing the opposition like a pack of wolves, Chelsea were looking to hide after they continued to have below-par seasons in the league.

Chelsea did not start the game badly but conceded an early goal in the first four minutes to Trossard. While the first half saw only one goal being scored, it was an absolute disaster in the second half. Ben White and Kai Havertz scored the brace while Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka, being the creator-in-chief, sliced Chelsea like a butter with a hot knife, handing them their second-largest defeat.

3) AFC Bournemouth vs Chelsea - 4-0, (Vitality Stadium - 2019/20)

It is tough for the teams to comprehend when there is a bogey team in a competition like the Premier League. And in 2019, the Cherries were the bogeyman for Chelsea while the Blues were featuring under Maurizio Sarri. Post this game, things went south for the Italian, and lost his job.

While Bournemouth under Eddie Howe, held the fort in the first half with none of the sides scoring, the Cherries came to life in the second half, putting four past them. Joshua King found the goal in the 47th minute and what followed was a carnage. David Brooks and Charlie Daniels were on the scoresheet against the Blues to complete the score.

4) Manchester United vs Chelsea - 4-0,  (Old Trafford Stadium - 2019/20)

What could go wrong when the club’s beloved and stalwart returns as a manager? The fans were eagerly looking forward to Frank Lampard’s tenure after the 2018/19 season. On the other hand, after a disastrous 2018/19 season, Manchester United were looking to put a big foot forward with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the helm.

While both looked at having a great start to the season, it was the Red Devils who tore the opposition apart. Marcus Rashford’s brace, Anthony Martial, and Daniel James’ goal ensured that Chelsea will have a tough start to the season.

5) Liverpool vs Chelsea - 5-1, (Anfield Stadium - 1996/97)

Anfield has always been a difficult place to fight for points even when they have been struggling across all competitions. But for Chelsea, it was a tough place to get out of even with a point. Such was the dominance of Liverpool even in their worst times.

In 1996, Roy Evans’ gave a reality check to Ruud Gullit’s men as they thrashed five past the Blues. Robbie Fowler scored in the 15th minute whereas Patrik Berger and Andy Myers’ own goals helped Liverpool to go 3-0 up at the half time. Patrik Berger scored his second in the second half while Barnes scored the fifth to complete the five-star show. In the 85th minute, Frank Lebouef scored the consolation goal for Chelsea.
