The English Premier League 2024/25 has been a bag of surprises, with Liverpool and Chelsea going toe to toe to lay their claims on the title. While it was expected at the start of the season that Manchester City and Arsenal would be fighting out for the title, with Manchester City’s poor start to the season, it is Liverpool who is leading the table by two points and a game in hand. However, Chelsea are not letting the Merseysiders run away with it. They have been in fine form, making breathing difficult for the Anfield outfit.
With the season half done, Chelsea are looking like a real deal and the fans have started to believe that their team might just nick the title. Can they actually win it? Here are the five reasons why Chelsea can win the Premier League title this season.
Five reasons why Chelsea can win the Premier League title this season:
1. Enzo Maresca’s simple tactical nuances
With his new job at Stamford Bridge, Enzo Marseca has shone brighter than ever. The former Leicester City manager has had everything right from day one, whether it be the transfers or the squad formation. The manager has covered all the bases.
With his simple approach across the front line, Maresca’s team has not only got the new manager bounce but also in red hot form. The manager’s simplicity has helped the side focus on scoring goals rather than complicating the game.
2. Getting the summer window right
Chelsea have always been known for their bigger squads that allows them to have great rotation and in the summer transfer window, they made sure that they are getting the perfect team for the playing style of Enzo Marseca.
They spent €238.5 million on players, including the likes of Pedro Neto, Joao Felix, and Dewsbury-Hall and loan signings like Jadon Sancho while also selling players worth €199 million, which included Ian Maatsen, Conor Gallagher, etc. This has allowed the club to have players featuring their philosophy rather than mercenaries.
3. Attackers in fine form
While Chelsea has struggled to find a striker who would replicate what Didier Drogba and Eden Hazard did in subsequent years, the strikers have come to party in the ongoing season. The likes of Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer have found the perfect chemistry and are finding the back of the net very often. Palmer has 11 goals, whereas Jackson and Madueke have 9 and 5, respectively. While one way can be defending and winning the games, Chelsea are able to find the back of the net multiple times in a high-scoring game to help register victories.
4. Defense stepping up at right time
While Chelsea continues to have great attacking prowess, it is also their defenders who have helped the side to stay afloat in the league. They have the third-best defensive record in the league, with them conceding only 19 goals, behind Liverpool (14) and Arsenal (15).
Last season, they had conceded 63 goals in the English top flight, a serious cause of concern that the club faced. However, the signing of Chalobah, Lewis Hall and Veiga helped the side get defensive solidity. Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer has worked wonders for the side who has conceded just four shots in the league. Chalobah has put his body on the line multiple times, accounting for 1.84 blocks per 90 and 1.73 interceptions per 90 in the Premier League, providing the side great stability and push for the title.
5. Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandes running the show
When Chelsea shelled the significant sum on the players previous season, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fenrandes, there were apprehensions about their performances. Throughout the last season, the Argentine international had just 5 G/A to his name in the English top flight, whereas Caicedo had only 3 G/A to his name.
However, the players have stepped up significantly in the ongoing campaign and have already breached the G/A numbers. But what they have done considerably differently is their midfield performance, including tackles, interceptions, and pass completion. Caicedo averages ~90% completion rate while also accounting for 1.15 blocks and 1.72 interceptions per 90.
On the other hand, Enzo has stepped up with his game reading and aggressive tackles. He has 1.36 tackles per 90 and 1.36 blocks per 90, which is a significant step up over the previous season's numbers. These have provided stability in the midfield, taking the side ahead.
