English aka British football has been synonymous with hefty transfer fees but recent years have seen some of these figures skyrocket to levels that were never seen before. The evolution of the transfer markets can be one of the reasons but on the other hand, the rise in quality of talent produced by the league has gone increasingly high.

It is not only inflation in the market but also the growing technical abilities and tactical understanding that have made this possible. The traditional stereotype of physically robust technically not adept and limited footballers is being broken with the increasing transfer values.

Here are the Top five expensive British signings in football history:

5. Harry Kane - Tottenham Hotspur to Bayern Munich - £ 78.8 million

One of the most shocking departures in the history of English football happened in the summer of 2023. Harry Kane moved from Spurs to Bayern Munich in a deal worth £78.8 million, marking a new beginning of his career. Tottenham Hotspur were through a transition phase which diminished the chances of winning any trophy in North London.

At Spurs, he became a club legend and was close to breaking Alan Shearer's record. For the North London outfit, Kane had amassed 278 goals in 430 appearances. His elite scoring rate in Germany continues to drive German giants forward across multiple competitions, while also filling the void left by Robert Lewandowski’s departure.

4. Gareth Bale - Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid - £ 83.8 million

From a marauding defender at White Hart Lane, to an attacker with spring boots and incredible pace on the wings at Santiago Bernabeu, Gareth Bale transformed the Premier League’s stature as a global talent provider. For Spurs, he has 55 goals over 200 appearances. At Madrid, he was criticised and scrutinized but never gave up and always contributed to Real Madrid’s title pursuit and Champions League race.

Before he hung his boots, he had five Champions League and three La Liga accolades. He also was a major part in Real Madrid's BBC trio, which caused a headache to several defensive units. Despite a complicated relationship with the Spanish media and some injury struggles, the transfer must be considered a success given his pivotal role in Madrid's most successful modern era.

3. Jude Bellingham - Borussia Dortmund to Real madrid - £ 93.7 million

The English midfielder, from day 1 in Germany was a superstar in the making. When Real Madrid came wanting the player, the German outfit did not hold the player back but departed at a great transfer fee. He had established himself as an elite midfielder at Dortmund with 27 G/A in 92 appearances.

As a teenager, 11 and 12 G/A in back-to-back seasons in Germany made him one of the most valued assets. At Real Madrid, he has struck the right chords from day one under Carlo Ancelotti, winning La Liga and the Champions League. The optimistic expectations are exceeded and has a potential future captain within him, justifying the splurge by the elite Spanish side.

2. Declan Rice - West Ham United to Arsenal - £ 96.7 million

One of the watershed moments in the history of both football clubs, Declan Rice’s transfer to North London remains one of the biggest transfers that the Gunners will remember for a long time. Arsenal shelled a huge sum of £ 96.7 million in July 2023 on a youngster who had developed into one of the premier defensive midfielders in Europe.

He had led West Ham United to Europa Conference League glory and had 204 Premier League appearances under his belt over seven seasons. At Arsenal, he has elevated their midfield as well as their gameplay, intercept and driving the ball forward, corners, and what not. The transfer has proven to be a masterstroke for Arteta and his men.

1. Jack Grealish - Aston Villa to Manchester City - £ 97.5 million

Jack Grealish’s transfer fees remains one of the greatest-ever transfer fees to be received by the English club for an English club in the English Premier League. The transfer raised multiple eyebrows across the world and the footballer proved his worth in the initial seasons. At Villa Park, Jack Grealish had fun scoring goals and assists, 59 G/A in 185 Premier League fixtures.

While his first season at City saw him adapting the system of Pep Guardiola while in the next campaign, he was part of the side that won the treble. However, the initial skepticism has remained the same with the player going goalless for an entire calendar year. For Manchester City, he has 33 G/A in 88 fixtures. Though the transfer helped transform Aston Villa’s future, Grealish’s career became meek.
