Chelsea had a nightmarish performance in the 25th gameweek of the English Premier League, drawing criticisms from fans and neutrals. They were taken to cleaners by Brighton and Hove Albion, who were too hot to handle. While Enzo Marseca called out the poor performance of the team, former footballers Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher also did not hold back.

Commentating about the game, Gary Neville mentioned that Chelsea never looked like scoring a goal as they lacked penetration and players never got into the box on time to have a chance. He also called out the game performance as “Really poor”. He said:

They looked like a five-a-side team. No penetration, never saw them bust a gut to get into the box, make a fast run forward,'

'I didn't see anything I liked from Chelsea tonight and it was a really poor, poor performance

On the other hand, former Liverpool player and the club legend, Jamie Carragher mentioned that the scoreline could have been much worse for Chelsea. Some of the incisive passes found the right players but Brighton and Hove Albion attackers failed to make it count. Karou Mitoma shot directly at the goalkeeper in a counter-attacking scenario whereas a chance hit the bar in the dying embers. The Merseysider said that “Chelsea were absolutely battered”. He said:

Badly beaten and it could have been a lot worse,'

'When you think of the saves the goalkeeper made, I think one hit the woodwork as well - [Brighton] absolutely battered them in all departments

What went wrong for Chelsea against Brighton and Hove Albion?

While Chelsea started the game brightly, Brighton and Hove Albion grew into the game stronger. Chelsea had two chances in the first few minutes of the game but Cole Palmer skied both chances despite having alternate options on the pitch who were better positioned to strike the ball. They had eight shots in the game but none were on the target. Despite having 70% possession, the Blues failed to make it count. Brighton were defensively imposing too, which made Chelsea’s life difficult.
