Here's why Andrew Robertson won't be banned for three matches despite being shown a red-card against Fulham

Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League points table is getting reduced with every passing match. They leveled 2-2 against Fulham in a thriller played at Anfield on Saturday (December 14). Liverpool played with only 10 men for the majority of the clash with Andrew Robertson being sent off in the 17th minute.

For the unversed, Robertson committed a foul on Harry Wilson and it was deemed to have denied a goal-scoring opportunity leading to a straight red card. According to the rules, any player who gets a red card during the match is banned for three matches with immediate effect and is sent off the field from the ongoing match as well.

However, in this case, while Robertson walked off the field as per rules after being shown the red card, he won’t be banned for the next three matches. Instead, he will only miss the next game for Liverpool, in a huge relief to the club. This is because of the Premier League rule that states that a three-game ban will not be imposed on a player if they are shown a red card for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

For the same reason, Robertson will only miss Liverpool’s League Cup quarter-final clash against Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium. Moreover, Liverpool will miss their manager Arne Slot after receiving a touchline ban for three yellow cards. This means both Arne Slot and Andrew Robertson will be back for Liverpool for the December 22 away clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

Arne Slot praises Robertson and team

As far as the match is concerned, Liverpool played admirably well despite going down to 10 men very early. They were 0-1 down when Robertson was sent off but Cody Gakpo scored the leveller while Diogo Jota did it again in the 86th minute after Rodrigo Muniz put Fulham 2-1 ahead in the 76th minute.

Manager Arne Slot was impressed with the players for the character they showed in the clash to finish on level terms. “I think what the team showed today, the character they showed, that's also what Robbo showed.

“Sometimes if you get a kick like this, two studs on a knee, that can hurt for a few minutes. Nothing to blame on him, [it was] character that he wanted to continue because he got quite a hard knock on his knee with two studs. Unfortunately it led to a red card that was a deserved red card,” Slot said after the match.
