Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is certainly gutted with his side’s 2-2 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday. Merseyside dropped vital points in the match and lost the top spot on the Premier League points table to Arsenal. Mohamed Salah scored the equaliser for Liverpool at a time when Jurgen Klopp’s men were down by one goal. After this match, Liverpool are now in 2nd position with 71 points on the Premier League points table. The top of the table is occupied by Arsenal, who also have the same number of points as Liverpool, i.e. 71 points. Liverpool’s Luis Diaz opened the scoring for Liverpool in the first half of the match at the 23rd minute. Manchester United did not score before the second half and it was only at the 50th minute mark that captain Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring for United.
Liverpool missed a great opportunity to increase the point gap between them, Arsenal and Manchester City. Jurgen Klopp was also disappointed with his side’s performance and was of the opinion that his team could have won the match fair and square. He was asked whether Liverpool would cheer on United against Arsenal to which he replied:
“Probably if we are still around then it would be great. But Arsenal is a good football team and if United play like they did today, Arsenal will win that game, I’m 100% sure. I’m really sorry to say it but we should have won both games (FA Cup Loss last month) and didn’t. That’s our fault.”
Klopp was also asked for his take on Liverpool not being the league leaders anymore, losing that position to Arsenal. Here’s what the German manager said, “We are who we are and we are how we are and that’s why we are in the race. I’m absolutely fine with that. I knew it would be super tricky until the end.”
Virgil van Dijk talked about Liverpool's mistakes and things they could have done differently in the first half of the match to get a bigger and better lead. Here's what the Dutchman had to say:
"We should have been 2-0 up at least. We had them under control. It definitely feels like a loss at this point. Because we were wasteful in our chances we gave them a lifeline.”
Liverpool will now hope to bounce back in the Premier League with a win against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
