Jude Bellingham made his 41st international appearance for the England senior team against Albania on Friday, surpassing a record previously held by Wayne Rooney. With this milestone, Bellingham became the player with the most international appearances before turning 21, breaking Rooney’s long-standing record of 40 caps at the under-21 level. In the match against Albania, Nathan Lewis-Skelly was the only player in the squad younger than Bellingham.
Not only does the Real Madrid star carry Wayne Rooney’s aura, but he has also been a key figure for England at Euro 2024, much like Rooney was during the 2006 World Cup.

What Did Wayne Rooney Say About Jude Bellingham?

Wayne Rooney, reflecting on Bellingham’s rise, praised his achievements for both club and country. Drawing comparisons to his own early career, Rooney recalled their first encounter on the pitch:
“I was at Derby, and he was at Birmingham. I was playing deep in midfield, controlling the game, and he man-marked me. I kept dragging him outside, and he didn’t like it. What I love about him is that when he goes in for a tackle, he leaves a mark—just like I used to.”
It’s no surprise that Bellingham has always admired Rooney. When asked about his biggest football influence growing up, he named Wayne Rooney as his idol.

What’s Next for Jude Bellingham?

After impressing Thomas Tuchel in his first match as England manager against Albania, Bellingham will aim to continue his stellar form in the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Latvia before returning to club duties.
With Real Madrid, the 20-year-old has his sights set on two major trophies:
La Liga, where Madrid is in a tight title race.
The UEFA Champions League, where they will face Arsenal in the quarterfinals.
Bellingham’s journey is far from over, and if his performances continue at this level, he could go down as one of England’s greatest-ever midfielders.
