Greece recorded their first-ever win over England by 2-1 in the ongoing UEFA Nations League clash on Thursday (October 10). This was the first loss for Lee Carsley as England's interim coach in three matches. The Three Lions also suffered a major setback with their star player Bukayo Saka going off the field in the second half. Carsley has provided the first major update on Saka since the match ended.
Greece have been on top of their game in the UEFA Nations League and are on top of their group after the historic win. They were on the front foot since the first half itself in the match against England but couldn’t find the net. However, in the 49th minute, Vangelis Pavlidis broke the deadlock, scoring a stunning goal.
The lead seemed to be enough for Greece but Jude Bellingham stepped up in the 87th minute of the match to score a leveling goal. However, the Greeks upped the ante in the dying stages of the encounter. Pavlidis took advantage of lapses in England’s defense to score the eventual winner in stoppage time (94th minute).
England were outplayed completely in the evening, but what added to their frustration was Saka walking off in the 52nd minute with an injury. He limped off the field and Noni Madueke replaced him. For the unversed, Saka plays for Arsenal in the English Premier League (EPL) and has been in excellent form this season, scoring two goals and assisting in seven in as many matches so far.
Opening up on his injury, Carsley stated that the Arsenal stand-in captain seemed to have picked up an injury soon after Greece’s first goal.
“He’s being assessed. In the build-up to the first goal, you could see he felt something in his leg,” he said (via Standard UK).
As far as the Nations League is concerned, England now sit at the third position in their group with three points and will next face Finland at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium on October 13 (Sunday).
Bukayo Saka delighted to lead Arsenal
Even as all eyes are on Bukayo Saka’s fitness, the English winger was proud to wear the armband for his club in the absence of regular captain Martin Odegaard.
“That’s one of the things where I become speechless when people ask me. Everyone knows my journey, where I came from. To take the captain’s armband, walk the lads out at the Emirates Stadium. I can’t put it into words,” he told CBS Sports (via 90 min).
