Lionel Messi names his favorite record during his Barcelona stint

Argentina superstar Lionel Messi might have left Barcelona in 2021 but he keeps going back recalling the memories created at the club. This time around he has stated that the 2008-09 sextuple winning season for the La Blaugrana was his favourite during his stint. For the unversed, Barcelona were in superb form in that season winning as many as six tournaments - LaLiga, Copa de Rey, Supercopa de Espana, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. The only other team since then to repeat this feat is Bayern Munich in 2020 as they won Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, DFL Supercup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.

Coming back to Messi, the legendary player joined Barcelona as a 13-year-old in 2000 turning up for the youth sides. He made his professional debut for the Catalans at the age of 16 only in a friendly match against FC Porto.

Fast forward to 2021, and Lionel Messi was arguably the greatest ever to play the sport. After spending almost two decades with Barcelona right from the youth fixtures, Messi was asked about his favourite record at the club in an interview with 3CAT.

“It’s the sextuple with Barcelona. That year, the team enjoyed everything—training, matches—every single day. We would go out to play, already confident about the result. The only question was how it would end, not whether we would win. Honestly, it was a year I truly enjoyed, and I think we all enjoyed everything about it,” Messi said.

Messi’s performance in 2008-09 season for Barcelona

Pep Guardiola was the manager of Barcelona when they achieved the sextuple in 2008-09 season and it was the year when Messi also announced himself as the global star. In the 51 matches across different competitions for the club, he netted as many as 38 goals wearing the much famous No.10 jersey.

Overall, Messi scored a staggering 318 goals for Barcelona senior team during his memorable stint with the club. Unfortunately, his exit in 2021 from the club was not on good terms, however, Messi has no hard feelings about it and only rejoices good memories.
