Liverpool find it really hard to counter Nottingham Forest
Liverpool’s Premier League title charge faced a significant setback as they were held to a 1-1 draw by a resilient Nottingham Forest on Tuesday. The top two sides, who had been in scintillating form, met at the City Ground for a high-stakes clash. The match began with Forest taking an early lead, thanks to a clinical strike from Chris Wood. The hosts managed to disrupt Liverpool’s rhythm and hold onto their lead for much of the first half. However, Liverpool dominated possession and pressure for the majority of the game, continuing to press forward in search of an equalizer. Their efforts were rewarded when substitute Diogo Jota scored with his very first touch, leveling the score at 1-1.
Despite a series of attempts to find a winner, it was Nottingham Forest’s goalkeeper Matz Sels who kept them in the game with a series of crucial saves, denying Liverpool all three points. The draw still left Liverpool with a six-point lead over Forest, but the gap could have been wider had it not been for Sels’ heroics. Meanwhile, in another key match, Manchester City's resurgence was halted at Brentford, as they were also forced to settle for a 2-2 draw, further complicating their pursuit of the top spot. Liverpool remain in control, but the race for the title continues to tighten.
Nottingham Forest’s recent form had raised hopes of an extraordinary title challenge, reminiscent of Leicester’s shock 2015/16 Premier League win. Forest had been on a seven-game winning streak across all competitions, and they started the match with confidence. Chris Wood, in particular, was in excellent form and gave the home crowd something to cheer about just eight minutes in, finishing off a well-timed pass from Anthony Elanga to put Forest 1-0 ahead.
Liverpool, dominant in possession with over 70% of the ball, had 23 shots on goal throughout the match but struggled to break down Forest’s defense. They failed to produce serious chances until the second half, when their persistence paid off. Substitute Diogo Jota, who had only been on the pitch for a few seconds, made an immediate impact. He rose to meet a perfectly delivered corner from Kostas Tsimikas and headed home to level the score at 1-1. Despite continued pressure from Liverpool, Forest’s goalkeeper, Matz Sels, produced a string of important saves, ensuring the home side earned a valuable point. Liverpool’s title hopes remain strong, but the draw, combined with Manchester City’s slip-up, has made the race for the Premier League crown even more thrilling.
