Liverpool superstar Virgil van Dijk has opened up on his contract renewal with the club. He has stated that there is no update on the situation even as his contract, based on the current deal, expires in June 2025. The 33-year-old is arguably one of the greatest defenders to have ever played for the Reds. He joined the club in the 2017-18 season and since then, has played 274 matches so far across competitions scoring 24 goals.
Being a defender, he has done a commendable job at not letting the opponents score and with that has tallied 24 goals. The Dutch footballer has also won the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup with the club among other tournaments. Despite such massive achievements, van Dijk’s future with Liverpool is not certain. In fact, from January 1, he will be allowed to negotiate deals with clubs outside the Premier League.
However, he has also confirmed that there is no deadline on when the contract will be extended with the club and is not yet thinking on his future. “There is no deadline at all. We will see what the future brings. Is there an update? No,” van Dijk said while talking to reporters after Liverpool’s 6-3 win over Tottenham on Sunday (December 22).
Virgil van Dijk reportedly wants to stay at Liverpool
According to the reports from CaughtOffside, Virgil van Dijk is keen on extending his contract with the club, thereby staying at Liverpool. In fact, the defender is ready to commit for a couple more years with favourable financial conditions.
Along with van Dijk, even superstar Mohamed Salah’s contract is also up for renewal with the Reds as it is expiring in June 2025. However, the two parties haven’t yet signed an extension deal despite Salah showing exceptional form this season scoring 18 goals in 24 outings across competitions. He is also the leading goalscorer of the Premier League at the moment this season.
When asked about the same, the Dutch defender played down the question saying that he doesn’t know whether Salah will be with the club for the next season.
