Álvaro Morata backs Rodri and Dani Carvajal to win 2024 Ballon d'Or

The race for the 2024 Ballon d'Or is heating up, with several names emerging as top contenders. For the first time in over a decade, neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor Lionel Messi is expected to lift the coveted trophy, adding an extra layer of intrigue. Many believe that Real Madrid forward Vinícius Jr. could claim the honor. Meanwhile Spanish captain Álvaro Morata has also shared his thoughts on the competition.According to the 31-year-old striker Álvaro Morata, he expects Manchester City midfielder Rodri or Real Madrid's Dani Carvajal to lift the Ballon d'Or.

His reasoning is based on both players having an exceptional year for both club and country. Rodri, in particular, shone with his defensive prowess, contributing 17 goals and assists while maintaining a 92% pass completion rate. Additionally, he averaged one tackle and one block per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He also scored a goal against West Ham United that sealed the record title for Manchester City. 

In UEFA Euro 2024, Rodri played a pivotal role in leading his national team to victory, earning the prestigious "Player of the Tournament" award. His standout performances culminated in a 2-1 triumph over England at Olympiastadion Berlin, securing the championship for his side.

What did Rodri say about the prospect of winning the Ballon d'Or?

"Yes, of course it would be a dream for me. There are a lot of people who say if Rodri is going to win it, how, for example, did [Andres] Iniesta or Xavi not win it? In part, I agree."

"Just being in the conversation makes me very proud of the work I’ve put in. But imagine for me, to be in the conversation that the people when I walk into the street, they say to me, you going to win the Ballon d’Or, you deserve it, and for me, that means I am already a winner with this," he concluded.

Unfortunately, Rodri's 2024-25 season was cut short when he picked up an injury during Manchester City's 2-2 draw against Arsenal. Later tests revealed that he has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the season.

On the other hand, Dani Carvajal played a crucial role in Real Madrid’s stellar season, excelling both domestically and internationally. He helped the team clinch La Liga and the Supercopa de España titles, while also leading them to victory in the UEFA Champions League against Borussia Dortmund, where he scored in the final.

Internationally, Carvajal added another major accolade to his year by winning UEFA Euro 2024 with Spain, further solidifying his claim for the Ballon d'Or. The winners of the prestigious Ballon d'Or trophy will be announced on October 28th at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, attracting global viewership as fans eagerly await the outcome.
