Manchester United set their sights on their new goalkeeper targets
According to recent reports in the media, Manchester United are set to secure the services of a new shot-stopper following Andre Onana’s poor performance in France on Thursday night. The reports suggest that the club is keen to bring in a new goalkeeper, as Onana has repeatedly delivered underwhelming performances, making the same mistakes and raising concerns about the team's progress.
Against Lyon, Manchester United drew 2-2 at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais, with Onana at the center of both goals conceded. For the first, the goalkeeper failed to stop a straightforward shot, and for the second, he parried the ball into a dangerous area, allowing Ryan Cherki to easily tap it in and level the score ahead of the second leg in England. This irked the fans due to the repeated mistakes.
With this, reports suggest that Manchester United are looking to secure the services of Brighton and Hove Albion shot-stopper Bart Verbruggen, who has helped his side stay afloat throughout the season. If the club were to sign him, £60 million is the price they might have to pay. However, with multiple priorities ahead, they may not be able to afford that fee and could look for cheaper alternatives like Zion Suzuki, Joan Garcia and Senne Lammens who are also linked with the club.
What had happened before the game and in the game?
Prior to the game against Manchester United, Nemanja Matic and Andre Onana were involved in a war of words. Onana claimed that Manchester United are far better than Lyon, to which Matic responded by calling Onana one of the worst goalkeepers in the club’s history. He referenced legends like Edwin van der Sar, Peter Schmeichel, and David De Gea, considered among the club’s best, and added that if you are not at that level, you should at least have proper cover to compensate.
If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United's history, you need to take care what you're talking about.
If it was [Edwin] Van der Sar, [Peter] Schmeichel or [David] De Gea saying that, then I would question myself. But you need to have cover to say something like that.
