Newcastle United finally ended the trophy drought at Wembley after they registered their first-ever Carabao Cup title on Sunday. In an intriguing fixture at Wembley, Liverpool were undone by Dan Burn and Aleksander Isak as the Magpies registered a 2-0 victory. This is the club’s first-ever title in 70 years, making it more special. On the other hand, Liverpool were left heartbroken and their gaffer Arne Slot went on to mention how his side was hungrier than the opposition in the fixture.

Talking about Newcastle United’s victory, Arne Slot mentioned that it is a historic moment for the fans, adding that the players will also be keen to win multiple trophies in a limited period of their playing career. He said:

It's 70 years since they've last won a trophy maybe, but that's for the fans,

The players only have 15 years to play football, and they want to win every single trophy they are competing for. That's also what we want.

Newcastle United were in their second finals in the last three years and the club looked competitive in the fixture. They pressed Liverpool hard and did not allow the opposition to mount on them. However, Arne Slot blamed it on the goal that Dan Burn scored in the last minute of the first half and mentioned that the goal gave them the edge that they wanted. However, he also agreed that the Magpies were more threatening in the first half than Liverpool.

It was a game that went the way [Newcastle] wanted it to go and they got some extra energy with the goal just before half-time, which they probably deserved after the first 45 minutes because they were threatening us more than we were threatening them.

Arne Slot also opined that his team was hungrier than the opposition in the fixture. However, in the gameplay, it was evident that Newcastle United had more shots on target and higher XG. Slot said:

I don't think there was more hunger from them

What next for Liverpool?

Liverpool are out of all competitions but the Premier League. In the Premier League, they are 12 points ahead of challenging Arsenal. With eight games to go in the league, Liverpool would want to seal the title with multiple games remaining to play and take home at least one trophy home this season.
