Pep Guardiola Signals A Contract Extension With Premier League Champions

Just like his predecessor Manuel Pellegrini, Guardiola’s contract expiration has also been the talk of the town for quite some time now. However, the difference between the two is that Pellegrini never talked about it to the press or any other media outlet until his exit from the club. On the other hand, Pep Guardiola’s conflicting statements on his future plans have everyone speculating where in May he hinted that the next season might be his last at the club but contradicting this during the current pre-season tour of the United States, he insinuated the extension of his tenure. After joining City in 2016, the manager has guided the team to incredible success, winning two FA Cups, six Premier League crowns, and their first Champions League trophy. He underlined how crucial it is to make sure that the club and its players gain from whatever decisions are made about his future.

Guardiola’s Statement About His Future

Before City's friendly match against Milan at Yankee Stadium in New York, Guardiola said to reporters,

"When I'm leaving, I will say I'm leaving, but I didn't say that. We will see what happens. But I will not rule it out absolutely to extend my contract. I would love to stay because I would love to stay.”

In addition, Guardiola attempted to defend his comments following the team's fourth consecutive Premier League championship.

"I stated that I had been a member of Man City for eight years. I will thus be leaving in eight years. I'm leaning more toward leaving than remaining because of this. But I didn't declare my departure!"

The manager, who joined City in 2016 and has since won six Premier League championships, two FA Cups, and the team's first Champions League, said,

"Nine years today in the same club is an eternity. I want to make sure that's the best choice. Not only for the players, the club, or me."

When asked if he would like to attend the anticipated 32-team Fifa Club World Cup in the United States next summer—a competition in which City has qualified—Guardiola firmly stated,

"I would love to."

Guardiola About Ederson’s Future At The Club

The 53-year-old also talked about the continuous rumors surrounding Ederson, the goalie, who was recently connected to a move to the Saudi Pro League. Guardiola was more open-minded on Friday after being unsure about the Brazilian's future earlier in the week.

“I wish with the bottom of my heart Eddie will continue with us,” Guardiola said. “I would love him to stay. I cannot imagine our processes succeeding these last seasons without him. He is an important figure in the locker room.”
