Ruben Amorim explains why Antony is thriving in Spain
Manchester United continue to struggle with injuries and financial mismanagement while also grappling with a growing concern regarding players, who perform well after leaving the club. Historically, the club has seen the likes of David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, and other iconic players, who left a significant mark on the global stage, with great success at Old Trafford. However, in recent years, many former players have left the club only to find renewed success, elsewhere. One such example is Antony, who initially had a bright start at Manchester United, contributing 3 goals and assists in his first three games.
However, his form began to decline as he accumulated more playing time. Since his loan move to Real Betis, the Brazilian winger has regained his confidence, registering 4 goals and assists in his first five games in La Liga. Talking about Antony’s resurgence, former Manchester United player and defender Rio Ferdinand highlighted the role of physicality in the player’s success in Spain. Ruben Amorim suggested that the physical nature of English football might be a key factor hindering players from settling at their new clubs.
While he acknowledged that there could be other reasons for Antony’s struggles in England, Amorim emphasized that in the Premier League, the intensity and physical demands often make it difficult for players to adapt and make their new club feel like home.
When you play against any team in England, the physicality is there. If you don’t have physicality, you will struggle a lot
Antony is so much better now in Spain. It’s [because of] a lot of factors but I guarantee you it’s physicality
Is this the sign of things to come in Amorim’s new squad?
Ruben Amorim’s setup in Portugal was heavily influenced by players who could make runs and maintain their intensity for all 90 minutes. His system also demands physically strong players who can keep up the intensity on the field. His recent signing, Patrick Dorgu, is similar, and early impressions suggest the player has great stamina. Meanwhile, his former player, Manuel Ugarte, has seamlessly adapted to the setup. Going forward, this could be the nature of transfers the club sees, starting in July 2025.
