Scott McTominay speaks about the mis-profiling of himself at Manchester United
One of the Manchester United players who did not receive the recognition he deserved while at Old Trafford but continues to gain recognition after leaving the club, Scott McTominay has opened up about the misprofiling of his role during his time at the club. He discussed how he adjusted to the role in his final years at the club. Speaking to the media, Scott McTominay explained that the misprofiling occurred when he broke out from the academy. He did not blame the coaches for this.
When I got into the first team, I was quite mis-profiled in where I was playing. It wasn't the fault of any coaches.
Talking about his strengths as a player, Scott McTominay spoke about his ability to get into the box and score goals, but he always played as a defensive midfielder or a defender, which never really worked out. He said:
My strengths have always been getting into the box, scoring goals, being a problem in there. But I was being used as a No 6, or as a centre-back, and that has never really been my game
Why did Scott McTominay agree to play the role which was a misfit for him?
Talking about the misprofiling and his role as a defensive midfielder, the Scottish midfielder mentioned that, as a youngster and a 20-year-old, he couldn't have his preferences when Paul Pogba was still at the club. However, he also mentioned that during his final seasons at Manchester United, he scored goals as he got into the box. In what was a challenging season for the club, Scott McTominay stated that it was his best season at the club. He said:
But when you're playing for Manchester United and you're 20, you can't knock on the manager's door and say that you expect to be playing at No 8 ahead of Paul Pogba. It's not realistic. You have to know your place, and do what you're asked to do. In the last few seasons, I began to get into the box a bit more, to score more goals, and then last year was my best one
