Every football league is known for its physicality, flamboyance, and flair but the best part of any league is the young players who are breaking out and making their strides. Some are the late bloomers in the young stage where they start to hit their first peak at 22 and 23 whereas few players make a mark at the age of 17 and 19.
In this article, we look at the top 5 young players in the Premier League 2024-25 who are slowly becoming the mainstay of their teams:
5. Rico Lewis - Manchester City
With a quite few seasons under his belt, Rico Lewis has slowly made the left-back spot his place in the Premier League. This is the player’s fifth season in the English top flight with 40 top-flight appearances under his belt.
He has scored 2 goals while having two assists to his name. For a defender, these stats should not be considered bad. Under Pep Guardiola’s tutelage, the defender has mastered the art of defending and passing with more than 85% pass completion and accounting for a tackle and a block per game. In a closely contested season like the ongoing one, he is expected to make a mark for the Cityzens.
4) Jack Hinshelwood - Brighton and Hove Albion
Rising through the ranks of Brighton and Hove Albion academy, Jack Hinshelwood has continued to grab the attention of neutral fans alongside the big clubs for his dynamism and versatility. The 19-year-old tasted his first minutes under Roberto de Zerbi two seasons ago but has become mainstay for his club in the last season.
In the previous season, the English youngster made a mark with 12 games and 10 starts with 4 G/A to his name. In the ongoing season, he has made 10 starts and what differentiates this player is his possession stats. Hinshelwood has a pass completion rate of 85% and accounts for a tackle per game. The player is expected to grow in stature for the Seagulls and leave his mark in the English top flight.
3) Alejandro Garnacho - Manchester United
The left-winger, breaking from Atletico Madrid academy, and moving to Manchester United, is becoming the poster boy of youth and flamboyance. With his electrifying pace, the 20-year-old has set the league on fire in recent times.
While the team has had challenges in scoring goals, the youngster has taken the responsibility on his shoulders and already has 11 G/A to his name across all competitions. No Manchester United fan would forget the astonishing bicycle kick scored against Everton in the previous season where he channeled Wayne Rooney to score the spectacular. Despite the struggles to maintain consistency in the last few fixtures, Garnacho is expected to have a great breakout season in the Premier League in 2024/25.
2) Kobbie Mainoo - Manchester United
One of the three players of the Garnacho-Rasmus-Kobbie youth trilogy, Kobbie Mainoo is making noise at Old Trafford for all the right reasons. The player debuted in the 2022/23 season but his breakout season was 2023/24, where despite injury, he was one of the best players for the club. He featured in 23 goals and had 4 G/A to his name.
However, as a midfielder, and for the age group he belongs, he has great numbers. Mainoo averages 2.06 tackles per 90 in the league alongside a pass completion rate of 90%. The 19-year-old is touted as the second coming of Paul Scholes, which every Manchester United fan wants to happen sooner rather than later.
1) Cole Palmer - Chelsea
The breakout star from the Manchester City academy made a move to London in a deal worth € 47 million in the summer transfer window of 2023. Ever since he moved, there has been no looking back from the English international with a Champions League to his name.
The left-footed player has 12 G/A in the English top flight from 11 games whereas in the international cups, he is yet to set foot. Even when Chelsea did not have a great season in the top flight in 2023/24, the 22-year-old was amongst the top scorers in the league with 22 goals and 11 assists. His play-making skills are next to none and Chelsea will look forward to his contributions in the ongoing season to keep their title challenge alive.
