Liverpool, one of the most decorated clubs in the history of football, continues to rise beyond the bounds. Despite a dull period in the 2000-2010s, they have struck the gold mine with Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot as their managerial appointments. They have won the Premier League and Champions League titles in recent years, extending their dominance in the global football landscape. What enabled them during their glory days and even today is their attacking football as well as the sharp goalscorers.

In this article, we will look at the top 5 goalscorers for Liverpool, who have been the spine of the club, holding the statement “You Never Walk Alone” alive:

5. Mohamed Salah - 222 goals*

The Egyptian King, Mohamed Salah, has been the torchbearer of Liverpool in the last decade. Ever since his move from the Italian outfit AS Roma in a deal worth €42 million, Mohamed Salah has not looked back. The right winger has played across positions, and his partnership with Roberto Firminho and Sadio Mane was one of the most dangerous in the league.

In the last eight seasons, Mohamed Salah has featured in 363 games and has 222 goals. His best season in the Premier League came in 2017/18, where he scored 32 goals and ten assists in 36 appearances for the Merseyside outfit. The impact that the player had on the playing style was immense, as his injury in the UCL final against  Real Madrid was felt by every fan. With more than six months left on his contract, Salah is expected to climb up in the goals tally and probably lay his hand on the title.

4. Billy Liddell - 228 goals

The Scottish international, Billy Liddell, has been one of the few top players who have been through and through Liverpool in the last century. The player was the top scorer for the side for eight out of nine seasons in 1949-1958 and also surpassed Elisha Scott’s record for most appearances for Liverpool.

Making his debut in the post-World War II era, Liddell made his debut in the FA Cup fixture in 1946 before becoming a dominant force for the side. The Scottish international had the first season with double figures in 1948/49, but Liverpool struggled to make it to the top ten. While Liverpool continued to decline, he made the topper in the goal tally in the late 50s. Despite the relegation and tempting offers from South American clubs, he stuck with the side through thick and thin, scoring 20+ goals in multiple seasons. The left winger is known for his goals but more so for his loyalty.

3. Gordon Hodgson - 241 goals

One of the finest ever goalscorers for Liverpool, Gordon Hodgson, left a mark on the field for Liverpool, whom the club found in South Africa and he made his move to England after World War I. Hailing from Transvaal, Gordon Hodgson made his debut for the club in 1925; he is termed as the hattrick bagger by the club as he had 17 hattricks to his name, the highest amongst the Liverpool players.

Gordon Hodgson was one of the few players who remained fit and available throughout the career, missing a few games only. In the 1930/31 season, he broke the club record and scored 36 goals in a season. The fans adored so much that Hodgson had a biscuit named after him, “Hodgson’s choice”. By the end of Liverpool's career, he had 233 goals from 358 games, one of the highest scorers for the club.

2. Roger Hunt - 285 goals

Before making his debut in tumultuous times for the Liverpool Football Club in 1958, Roger Hunt rose through the ranks of Bury, Stockton Heath and Devizes Town. Roger Hunt was a skilful individual, through whom the football was a poetry in motion. While Liverpool struggled in the second division, Roger Hunt played a huge role in keeping the morale high of the fans with goals.

In the promotion season of 1961/62, Roger Hunt went on to score 41 goals from 41 matches. In the next few seasons, he scored 129 goals from 160 games, putting him at the top of the goal scorers list. Hunt was the top scorer for eight years straight but still had a funny name, “Over-the-bar Hunt”. He retired with 285 goals and was awarded MBE in 2000.

1. Ian Rush - 346 goals

The Welsh international remains the top goalscorer for the Merseyside outfit, with the player making his debut internationally before he donned the Liverpool jersey. After spending most of his time in the reserves in his first-ever season, Rush became most important in the upcoming season as he helped his side stride forward with a hat trick in 1981. He ended the season with 30 goals from 49 appearances, with a goal ratio of 1 to 1.6. This performance helped Liverpool to win the top flight in that season.

Over the years, he was ingrained in Liverpool and English football culture so much that he struggled at Juventus, where he was there for a season. Upon returning to Liverpool, despite having competition in the XI, he became the mainstay for several years, winning multiple League Cups and Liverpool’s last Premier League title until Klopp won it in 2020.
