Top five players with most appearances for Real Madrid

1. Raúl González (741 games)

El Siete redefined the meaning of being a Real Madrid captain. He changed what people took easily. Starting his career in his teenage years as a prodigy at Atletico’s youth system, Raul evolved into a prodigy at Madrid. The 741 games for the Los Blancos do not only talk about the longevity but also the standards he set for the players who were about to walk into the club.

In the Champions League finals in 2000, his clinical finish was the difference in helping the side secure the eighth European trophy. But this was not the only game that captured the essence of the player. Against Sporting Gijon in a league match, he played through with a broken finger and even helped the side secure the goal. When he departed from the side, he had more than 320 goals and 135 assists to his name, underlining his work ethic, professionalism, and prolific ability.

2. Iker Casillas - 725 games

San Iker's journey from ball boy to club legend epitomizes the Madrid dream. His 725 appearances tell a story of excellence, loyalty, and miraculous saves that defied physics. His breakthrough moment came at just 18 when he was thrust into the 2000 Champions League final after an injury to César Sánchez. Rather than crumble under pressure, he produced a masterclass that helped secure the trophy.

Perhaps Iker’s most iconic performance came in the 2002 Champions League final against Bayer Leverkusen, making a series of impossible saves in the closing minutes to preserve Madrid's ninth European Cup. The sight of Casillas stretching every sinew to deny opponents became so common that Madrid fans almost took it for granted. His reflexes weren't just quick,  they were match-defining, title-winning, and era-defining.

3. Manolo Sanchís - 709 games

A defender whose 709 appearances spanned the transition from the Quinta del Buitre era to the dawn of the galácticos. Sanchís represented continuity during times of profound change at Real Madrid. His defining moment arrived in the 1998 Champions League final against Juventus, where his defensive masterclass helped end Madrid's 32-year wait for European glory. But it wasn't just the big games – Sanchís brought the same intensity to every match, whether it was a Champions League final or a Copa del Rey tie.

In an era when defending was an art form, he was both an artist and warrior. His partnership with Fernando Hierro became the bedrock upon which Real Madrid built their success in the late 1990s, proving that while strikers win matches, defenders win championships.

4. Sergio Ramos - 671 games

If there is any player who can be attributed to Real Madrid’s never-say-die attitude, it has to be Sergio Ramos. Joining the capital outfit from Sevilla, Ramos went over and above to perform as a central defender. He featured over 671 appearances for the side and nobody would forget his 92:48 header in the Champions League finals against Atletico Madrid turned not only the competition but also the dominance of Real Madrid in Europe.

Time and again, Sergio Ramos rose to the occasion. May it be crunching tackles or scoring crucial headers, he was the go-to person for Los Blancos’ gaffers. From a hot-headed young right-back to one of the world’s best center-backs, Ramos’ evolution is exemplary. Ramos understood that wearing the captain's armband at Real Madrid meant being the first to fight and the last to surrender.

5. Karim Benzema - 648 games

From being known as a selfless guy to the marauding Cristiano Ronaldo to being the protagonist of Real Madrid’s attack after the Portuguese’s departure, Karim Benzema lived the most phases of life at Santiago Bernabeu. From being called and criticized as “a cat” by Jose Mourinho to winning the Ballon d’Or is one of the greatest character arcs in football.

The turning point of his ascendency in his 6648 appearances came against PSG and Chelsea in the 2021/22 campaign followed by the crucial goals against Manchester City to stage an ultimate comeback. Even when age was not on his side, his technical ability and intelligence were his virtues. When he moved to the Middle East, he had 354 goals and 165 assists to his name in the whites of Real Madrid.
