The English Premier League 2024/25 season has started with a bang. The iconic clubs continue to rule the table while few of them continue to resurrect, whereas the early relegation battlers are already here. Liverpool are topping the table while surprisingly, Manchester City are behind by 11 points after 13 gameweeks.
While Liverpool is trying to run away with the league title before Christmas, the bottom-ranked clubs have yet to cross double-digit points in the league.
Here are the top five relegation contenders in the Premier League season that is up and brewing the plot:
5. Leicester City
The Foxes are back in the Premier League, but with their current form, they are on a slippery slope. Though their condition is not as bad as others in the relegation battle, they have only ten points from 13 games, averaging less than a point per game. Just being a point above the 18th-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers makes it all difficult for the Foxes.
The Foxes have struggled for points in the last five fixtures, with one point from these games. The losses have impacted them heavily and cost the manager his job, with Steve Copper sacked and replaced by Ruud van Nistelroy. It remains interesting to see if the former Manchester United interim can turn around the season and survive the drop.
4. Everton
The Merseyside outfit, which started their campaign on a good note with two wins and two draws from eight games, have struggled to get going and have 11 points from 13 games. The team has drawn three fixtures in the last five and have failed to secure all three points in any of the games. The team has struggled to snatch points from the relegation-fighting Southampton, too.
What’s concerning is the next run of games that they have in the Premier League. In the next games, until the end of January, they will face the top six ranked clubs at the point, with them facing Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool in the next three weeks in the top flight. It is also interesting to see if Sean Dyche will be able to remain at the helm of affairs at the end of the year.
3. Ipswich Town
Under McKenna, the newly promoted side in the English Premier League, Ipswich Town, have struggled to adapt to the pace of the top-flight after a good season in the Championship. The only respite at this point for Kieran McKenna is the club's ability to take home five points in their last five games, taking their points tally to nine in the Premier League.
Their only win has come against Tottenham Hotspur, which is a saving grace, avoiding them from the wooden spoon. In their next five games, they will play two relegation-battling teams, and wins against these sides would help them fight the drop effectively. Can McKenna turn it around?
2. Wolverhampton Wanderers
The Wolves under Julen Lopetuigi is already under fire after a series of underwhelming performances in the English Premier League. After qualifying for Europe, the club's crest fell. Last season, they finished 14th, but the club failed to arrest the slump.
In the ongoing season, they spent close to £30 million but have failed to lift the standards with just nine points from 13 games, with a negative goal difference 10. In the next ten games, barring two games against the relegation-battling Ipswich and Leicester City, they will be playing against the top ten sides of the league, making life difficult for Julen Lopetuigi. Can Wolves survive the drop?
1. Southampton
The St. Mary 's-based outfit has struggled for consistency and points in the ongoing season. They have just five points to their name after 13 games with a negative goal difference of 15. After getting a bright start, Southampton have struggled to get going in the games. Of the five points accumulated, they have gained four points in the last five games, with their only win of the season coming against Everton, who might be in the relegation chaos at the end of the season.
The goals have been hard to come by for the side that has struggled for the points. Russell Martin, the gaffer at St. Mary's, held the club owners' confidence in October, but it has slowly faded away. It remains interesting to see if the manager can turn around the season and avoid a drop just after the season they got promoted to the top flight.
