UEFA Champions League 2024: Manchester City, Inter Milan settle for a draw

Manchester City experienced a frustrating start to their UEFA Champions League campaign, settling for a 0-0 draw against Inter Milan on Wednesday. This match served as a rematch of the 2023 final, which City had won. Despite their strong form in the Premier League, where they have won all four of their games this season, they struggled to find their rhythm against the Italian champions. The absence of Kevin De Bruyne, who was sidelined with an injury at half-time, further complicated their efforts. City's best opportunity came from Phil Foden, who unfortunately directed his shot straight at Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer. Meanwhile, star striker Erling Haaland, who was looking to mark the occasion with his 100th goal for the club, was kept at bay by a solid Inter defense. The match highlighted City’s difficulties in breaking down a well-organized opponent, leaving Guardiola’s side with much to ponder as they seek to regain their footing in Europe.

UEFA Champions League: Inter Milan hold back Manchester City

On the other hand, Paris Saint-Germain faced a challenging encounter against Girona, needing a last-minute goal to secure a victory over the tournament newcomers. As the group stage of the Champions League unfolds, both teams will aim to sharpen their performance in their upcoming fixtures, with City particularly eager to bounce back from this disappointing result.

"It was a very intense game against a strong opponent. We knew what was coming, they are a top team as well and they are used to winning, so we were not going to have an easy job," Manchester City defender Ruben Dias in a recent interview.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan had a golden opportunity to secure a win for Inter Milan when he sent a shot soaring over the crossbar with just 15 minutes remaining in the match. His missed chance ultimately allowed Manchester City to maintain their unbeaten streak in the Champions League, which now stands at 24 matches—just one shy of the record set by Manchester United from 2007 to 2009.

Despite dominating much of the game, City struggled to convert their chances into goals, marking a rare occasion in their UEFA Champions League history. This was only the second time in 42 home games under manager Pep Guardiola that City has failed to find the back of the net. The result reflects a significant challenge for Guardiola, as his team, typically prolific in attack, was unable to break down Inter's resolute defense.

The match served as a reminder of the competitive nature of the Champions League, where even the most formidable teams can face difficulties. For City, the draw highlights the need for greater clinical finishing, especially in crucial encounters. As they look to bounce back in their upcoming matches, the team will be keen to harness their attacking talent and capitalize on scoring opportunities to ensure they continue their pursuit of European glory.

"Our plan was to show that we're not scared to play here," said Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) faced a tense match against Girona, a team making its European debut and backed by the City Football Group. Girona had performed admirably in La Liga last season, finishing third after challenging Real Madrid for several months. As the game unfolded, it appeared that PSG would have to settle for a frustrating draw against their determined opponents.

However, in a dramatic twist in the 90th minute, a costly error from Girona's goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga changed the course of the match. He misjudged a cross from Nuno Mendes, allowing the ball to slip through his grasp. This unexpected blunder proved pivotal, gifting PSG the victory they desperately sought.

The win, while crucial for PSG, highlighted the vulnerabilities in Girona’s defense, particularly in high-pressure moments. Despite their competitive spirit and solid performance throughout the match, the error underscored the fine line between success and failure in such a prestigious tournament. For PSG, the last-minute goal not only secured three points but also boosted their confidence as they navigate the challenges of the Champions League. As the competition progresses, both teams will need to refine their performances—PSG to build on their momentum and Girona to learn from their experiences in Europe’s elite competition.

"It was a difficult game, they're a team that plays well with the ball. I was surprised (by the goal). The goalkeeper was there and it got through," Mendes noted.
