Virgil van Dijk provides update on his contract situation at Liverpool
According to the latest statement made by Virgil van Dijk following the elimination in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, Liverpool fans are now feeling uneasy. The statement suggests that the club’s monumental central defender might be on his way out of Anfield come the summer. The player’s contract expires on June 30th, 2025, and the club has yet to have a conversation with the Dutch international. Speaking to the media, van Dijk mentioned that he has no idea at the moment, as the club has yet to make a decision on the matter. He said:
I have no idea,
I still have no idea at the moment. Genuinely. I have no idea at the moment
The Dutch international will turn 34 in July, and his last contract extension came in 2021. However, the player is on the wrong side of 30 and that might be one of the reasons behind the club having second thoughts. Virgil van Dijk mentioned that, with ten games left in the Premier League, he wants to focus on that. He hinted that conversations are taking place, but the club is yet to decide on the matter. He said:
It is not on hold. Nothing on hold. There's just... I keep saying the same thing. Listen, there are ten games to go, and that is my full focus. If there is news, you guys will know it. I don’t even know myself. Everyone knows there are some conversations behind the scenes but that is about it.
What do Liverpool and Virgil van Dijk have to look out for the rest of the season?
Liverpool have a 15-point lead in the English Premier League, and with ten games to go, they need just five wins to secure the title. On 16th March, they will face Newcastle United in the final of the Carabao Cup at Wembley, aiming to win their first title of the season. Arne Slot’s men will look to avoid dropping any points in the upcoming Premier League fixtures following the international break, as it currently seems similar to what transpired in the previous campaign.
