"We could have won it"- concedes Christian Eriksen post 1-1 draw against Arsenal
While Manchester United fans would have accepted a 2-0 loss after Arsenal thrashed PSV in their previous fixture across all competitions, the sentiment has changed after the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. There is now a sense of disappointment about not winning the game. This feeling has been echoed by the players as well, with Christian Eriksen expressing that “we could have won it.”
Talking to the media after the game, Christian Eriksen was pleased with the performance the team put in against Arsenal. Regarding the controversial free-kick wall, he mentioned that he was happy with the wall being 15 meters away. He also discussed how the fans reacted after scoring the first goal. Additionally, Eriksen stated that if they had taken their chances, Manchester United would have won the game. He said:
Very good, happy that the wall was about 15 metres away. You saw how far back they were and it was beneficial for us. We felt relief from the fans in the stadium after the goal. If you look at the chances, we could have won it. We tried to play on the counter as much as possible which was the game plan
Talking about the game, Ruben Amorim also mentioned that the team performed well. He expressed some apprehension about playing a defensive game while allowing the opposition to have possession. Amorim praised Victor Lindelof and Casemiro for their significant contributions in the game, where the stakes were high.
Think we did well. Of course we don't want to play like this defending so much and giving the ball to the opponent. With all the games and characteristics of the players. [Victor] Lindelof for example without a lot of games. Casemiro is more comfortable in this sort of game. It's the opponent.
Who will not be available for selection against Real Sociedad for Manchester United?
Manchester United will now turn their focus to the second leg of their Europa League campaign. The Red Devils will see Patrick Dorgu returning to the fixture after serving his ban against Arsenal, while the availability of Leny Yoro remains doubtful, as he did not take the field in the second half. Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Kobbie Mainoo, Jonny Evans, Amad, and Altay Bayindir continue to be long-term absentees for the side.
