Southampton’s hopes of securing a crucial win were dashed by a contentious VAR decision in their 1-1 draw against high-flying Brighton on Friday. The match, held at the Amex Stadium, had moments of brilliance and controversy, leaving the Saints frustrated as they continue to struggle at the bottom of the table. Brighton took an early lead through Kaoru Mitoma, whose excellent finish gave the Seagulls the upper hand. However, Southampton responded with determination, and Flynn Downes equalized, reigniting the visitors' hopes. The drama escalated when Cameron Archer seemingly put Southampton ahead with a well-taken goal, sparking celebrations in the away camp.
But the celebrations were short-lived as VAR intervened. After an exhaustive four-minute review, Archer was deemed onside, but Adam Armstrong was ruled to have interfered with play despite not touching the ball. The decision to disallow the goal left Southampton aggrieved, as it robbed them of what would have been a vital victory in their fight against relegation. The Saints ultimately had to settle for their first away point of the season. While the draw was a small step forward, Southampton remain rooted to the bottom of the table, four points adrift of safety. For Brighton, the result marked another step in their strong campaign, though they too will reflect on missed opportunities to claim all three points. The VAR controversy will likely remain a talking point as both teams prepare for their next challenges.
Brighton climbed to second place on alphabetical order, edging ahead of Manchester City, who take on leaders Liverpool in Sunday’s marquee clash. However, the Seagulls were left frustrated after failing to capitalize on their dominant first-half performance in a 1-1 draw with Southampton.
Brighton created plenty of opportunities in the opening stages. Georginio Rutter struck the post and missed another close chance, while Kaoru Mitoma squandered a golden opportunity early on. Their persistence paid off in the 30th minute when Mitoma made amends, heading home Tariq Lamptey’s precise cross to give Brighton a deserved lead. Southampton came out stronger after the break, with Tyler Dibling playing a pivotal role in their resurgence. His impressive playmaking led to Flynn Downes’ equalizer 13 minutes into the second half, silencing the home crowd.
Teenager Tyler Dibling played a pivotal role in Southampton’s fightback against Brighton. His intelligent square ball set up Adam Armstrong, whose initial shot was blocked. However, the loose ball fell to Flynn Downes, who unleashed a thunderous first-time strike from the edge of the area to level the score. Dibling continued to shine just minutes later, weaving his way past three Brighton players deep inside his own half before spreading the ball to Ryan Fraser. Fraser’s low cross skipped past Armstrong but found Cameron Archer at the far post for what seemed to be a stunning go-ahead goal.
However, the celebrations were short-lived as VAR controversially disallowed the goal, citing Armstrong for interfering with play despite not touching the ball, leaving Southampton manager Russell Martin visibly frustrated. The lengthy VAR review resulted in 13 minutes of added time, during which Brighton came agonizingly close to snatching a late victory. Simon Adingra’s stretching effort glanced off the outside of the far post, leaving the Seagulls to rue missed opportunities.
"I'm fed up talking about decisions. We were told it affects Bart Verbruggen ability (to play the ball) and if Adam's run moved Verbruggen from his position then I would understand the decision, but he hasn't moved. I cannot see how it has affected the goalkeeper," said Martin.
