Manchester United went down to Wolves 0-2 in the Premier League on Wednesday (December 26). However, more than the loss, what hurt them was the red card shown to their key player Bruno Fernandes. He was sent off in the 47th minute after a collision with Wolves defender Nelson Semedo.
This was his third red card of the season and after getting the latest one, there was confusion whether Fernandes would be banned for one or two matches. However, his red card against Spurs in October was overturned and hence, the midfielder will serve a one-game suspension. He will now miss the home game against Newcastle on December 30.
To clear up any confusion, Bruno Fernandes will be available for United’s clash against Liverpool next week on January 5 (Sunday) at 10 PM IST. Meanwhile, Fernandes is the first United player to be sent off three times in a season across competitions since Nemanja Vidic in 2008-09.
Amorim reacts to Fernandes’ red-card incident
Bruno Fernandes was also the topic of discussion in the post-match press conference with Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim expressing frustration over the same. He also sympathised with Fernandes over the incident stating that the latter only wanted to win the ball and ended up getting collided to the opposition player.
“I am always frustrated with the red card, but it can happen as he always wants to go for the ball. It is not like he wants to stop the player with a yellow [card]. He wanted to go for the ball, the guy got there first and there is a contact and that thing is tough on him also.
Meanwhile, United will also be without midfielder Manuel Ugarte for the game against Newcastle. The Uruguayan player picked up his 5th yellow card of the season against Wolves.
The loss against the Wolves has pushed Manchester United to the 14th position in the table as they have only six, drawn four and lost 8 in 18 outings with only 22 points to their name. On the other hand, Wolves are at the 17th place with their latest win being the fourth of the season in 18 matches having lost 11 and drawn 3.
