Argentina superstar Lionel Messi is likely to sign a contract extension with Inter Miami when it expires next year, according to renowned journalist Gaston Edul. For the unversed, Messi joined the MLS club in the summer of 2023 and his contract is set to run till next summer. Meanwhile, Luis Suarez has officially signed a contract extension through the next MLS season with Inter Miami. If the club manages to secure Messi at least for one more season, it will be huge for them.
Arguably the GOAT of football, Lionel Messi has taken Inter Miami to unprecedented heights ever since joining the club. He helped them win their first-ever trophy (Leagues Cup) in his debut season. This year, they lifted the Supporters’ Shield trophy by topping the MLS regular season points table.
However, the Herons couldn’t perform to the expectations in the best-of-three series of the MLS Cup Playoffs only to be eventually eliminated by Atlanta United. However, Messi’s performance for Miami has been superb having netted 24 goals in 31 appearances for the club and also assisted in 15 goals.
Given his brilliant show for them, the club is reportedly interested in renewing his contract beyond 2025. In fact, the club is intending to extend it until after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Nothing is finalised yet but the negotiations are said to be on track.
Javerio Mascherano reunites with Messi in Inter Miami
Meanwhile, Lionel Messi’s former Argentina and Barcelona teammate Javier Mascherano has been appointed the new coach of Inter Miami. The owner of the club David Beckham is happy with the appointment as he feels Javier’s knowledge of the game makes him the perfect fit for the role.
The 40-year-old has signed a contract for three years with the club and will be with the team till 2027.
“Throughout his career as one of the world’s best players and as an experienced coach, Javier has always demonstrated what makes him great - relentless determination with the knowledge, instincts and understanding to back it up. We’re very excited to welcome him to lead our team,” Beckham said (via TNT Sports).
