Hockey India announced an 18-member Indian men’s Hockey team for the exciting Asian Champions Trophy scheduled to begin in Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia in China from September 8 to September 17. The defending Champions India will be led by ace drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh and will be supported by experienced midfielder Vivek Sagar Prasad as the vice-captain. This was the first time since the 1972 Munich Olympics that the Indian men's hockey team won a medal in consecutive Olympics. PR Sreejesh retired after the Paris Olympics, bringing an end to an illustrious career that lasted the better part of a decade and a half. The latest rise to 5th place in the FIH hockey world rankings is a result of the consecutive bronze medals won by Harmanpreet and Co. in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Hockey India announces 18-member men's hockey team for Asian Champions Trophy in China
Hockey India named an 18-member Indian men's squad on Wednesday for the 2024 Asian Champions Trophy scheduled to be held in Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia in China from September 8 to September 17. This will be the first international tournament for India since their bronze medal-winning performance in the Paris Olympics 2024. The tournament will also mark the beginning of the next Olympic cycle for the Indian men's hockey team and their Asian rivals.
Head coach Craig Fulton emphasized the significance of the Asian Championships as this is an important campaign for the India men's hockey team to ensure they build on their ranking points. He mentioned that the team has recently returned to the camp after celebrating their performance in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Fulton expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support and adulation the team has received and hopes that this will continue throughout their future campaigns.
"The new Olympic cycle for us begins with the Asian Champions Trophy and we are ready for the challenge. While we have rested a few players from the squad that played in Paris, we have brought in a few youngsters who have done well in training and have earned the opportunity to play in the Asian Champions Trophy. As a team, we want to continue to dominate in the Asian continent and we will go to China to retain the title," Craig Fulton said.
10 players from the 2024 Olympic medal-winning team have been named in the squad, while 5 players Hardik Singh, Mandeep Singh, Lalit Upadhyay, Shamsher Singh and Gurjant Singh have been rested for this tournament. As veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh announced his retirement, Hockey India named Krishan Bahadur Pathak as the first-choice goalkeeper, while Suraj Karkera has been named as the stand-by. Defenders Jarmanpreet Singh, Amit Rohidas, Harmanpreet Singh, Jugraj Singh, Sanjay and Sumit have been included in the squad.
