From lagoons to historical landmarks, the Olympic flame has taken an impressive journey across southern France. The Olympic flame began its first week of relay by leaving Marseille on Thursday, May 9. It passed through various departments in south France, including the scenic Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Arles (famous for its photography festival), and Montpellier. The flame then crossed the Mediterranean to spend a day in Corsica before continuing to the Pyrénées. The Olympic flame finally entered France as it reached the seaport of Marseille, in the south of the country. After being lit by the sun's rays on April 16 in ancient Olympia, the torch was carried across Greece before departing Athens on a three-masted ship named Belem, bound for Marseille. In this blog, we outline everything you need to know about the Olympic Flame and the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
Everything you need to know about the Olympic Flame and the 2024 Summer Olympics
1. The traditional Olympic Flame
Is this the moment? Have we reached the critical point? With two and a half months remaining before the start of the Paris 2024 Games, organizers and public authorities have been announcing the tipping point for months to signify the beginning of widespread support and excitement in France for this summer's event. But has it been reached? This is it, the party's here," said French Minister for Sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Games Amélie Oudéa-Castéra on Wednesday, May 8, as the city of Marseille became the first to welcome the flame to France. Moving to the latest Olympics news, the 2024 Summer Olympic Games are set to make history, with the Opening Ceremony taking place outside a stadium in a River for the first time ever. The opening ceremony is scheduled for July 26 and will be held on the Seine River. Each national delegation will have their own boat that will be equipped with cameras. This will allow television and online viewers to get a closer look at the athletes. The 10,500 athletes will travel from east to west, crossing through the centre of the city. The parade will end its six-kilometre route in front of the Trocadéro, where the remaining events of the Paris Olympics 2024 protocol and final shows will take place.
