A Look at Indian athletes who finished 4th at the Paris Olympics 2024

Star Indian weightlifter and 2020 Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu finished in 4th place in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. Mirabai Chanu's result was the latest to join "4th place curse" for Indian athletes in the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, with Manu Bhaker in women’s 25m rapid fire pistol, Arjun Babuta in men's 10m air rifle, Dhiraj Bommadevara and Ankita Bhakat in mixed team archery, Lakshya Sen in men’s badminton singles, and the duo of Anantjeet Singh & Maheshwari Chauhan in mixed skeet among those who finished in the 4th spot in their respective events. In this blog, we take a look at Indian athletes who finished 4th at the Paris Olympics 2024.

A Look at Indian athletes who finished 4th at the Paris Olympics 2024

1. Mirabai Chanu (women’s 49kg weightlifting)

Mirabai Chanu, who was one of the few remaining medal contenders for India in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024, missed out on a bronze medal by 1kg. Earlier, she set the tone for a podium finish with a perfect lift in her first attempt of 85 kg in the Snatch round. The 29-year-old weightlifter then failed to lift 88kg on her second attempt and had to wait till her 3rd attempt in the Snatch round to achieve the target. With a best attempt of 88kg in Snatch, she was in the third spot in the table going into the Clean-and-Jerk round.

However, in the second round, Mirabai Chanu got off to a poor start, as she fouled on her first try at lifting 111kg. However, the Commonwealth Games gold medalist achieved her target in the second attempt, taking her total to 199kg. However, Mirabai Chanu failed to achieve her 2020 Tokyo Olympics best result of 202kg this time around, as her final attempt of 114kg resulted in a foul. In the end, she dropped to the fourth spot behind Surodchana Khambao of Thailand, who finished with 200kg and missed out on a bronze medal by the barest of all margins in the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.

2. Manu Bhaker (25m air pistol)

Star Indian shooter Manu Bhaker qualified for the 25m air pistol final after finishing 2nd in the qualification rounds but was unable to add a third Olympic medal to her kitty and had to settle for a fourth-place finish. In the all-important shoot-off to decide the fourth place, Manu Bhaker missed two targets compared to Veronika Major’s single miss and a historic third Olympic medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 slipped out from her in cruel fashion. Despite the way her campaign ended, Manu Bhaker made history aplenty at the Paris Olympics 2024. Earlier, she became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in shooting after winning the bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol final. She then won the bronze in the 10m air pistol mixed team event with Sarabjot Singh to clinch India’s first shooting medal in a team event at the Olympics. No Indian has won three individual medals at the Olympics. Norman Pritchard, Sushil Kumar, PV Sindhu and Manu Bhaker have won two medals each.

3. Lakshya Sen (men's badminton singles)

Lakshya Sen became the first Indian male shuttler to reach the semi-finals of the Olympics, but he missed out on a historic medal after going down against Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia in the bronze medal match. The 22-year-old Sen failed to become the first Indian badminton player to win an Olympic medal in the men’s event. At La Chapelle Arena, Lakshya Sen suffered a 13-21, 21-16, 21-11 loss to world No. 7 Lee Zii Jia in 71 minutes. Sen also struggled with a bruise to his right forearm which had to be taped for most of the contest. In the end, he just couldn't mentally recover in the third game and the Malaysian dominated the rallies in the decider to win the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics.

India has won three medals in the Paris Olympics 2024 so far. Manu Bhaker opened India's account on July 28 by winning a bronze medal in the women's 10m air pistol final, and on July 30, she added one more medal, in the 10m air pistol mixed team event along with Sarabjot Singh. India’s third medal, which was also a bronze, was won by shooter Swapnil Kusale. But since then, India has failed to win any medals, and as a matter of fact, the dreaded "4th place curse" for Indian athletes continues to haunt them. The Indian athletes have finished fourth on six occasions starting with Arjun Babuta in men's 10m air rifle, Manu Bhaker in women’s 25m rapid-fire pistol, Dhiraj Bommadevara and Ankita Bhakat in mixed team archery, Lakshya Sen in men’s badminton singles, the duo of Anantjeet Singh & Maheshwari Chauhan in mixed skeet and Mirabai Chanu in the women’s 49kg weightlifting among those who finished in the 4th spot in their respective events.
