The 2024 Paris Olympics has come to an end, with India collecting 6 medals this season. The next Olympic Games will be held in Los Angeles, USA, after the customary 4-year wait. The 2028 season promises an exciting spectacle for India, as cricket will make its long-awaited re-entry into the Games. Cricket, along with other sports like squash, lacrosse, and baseball, has been included in the Olympic program set to commence in the 2028 LA season. Cricket was last played in the Olympics in 1900, where France and Great Britain were the only participants in the discipline. Now, with cricket finally set to be played in the Olympics again in the next edition, Indian cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues has expressed her excitement about competing in this prestigious tournament.
Jemimah Rodrigues Excited For The 2028 LA Olympics
Jemimah is an integral part of the senior Indian women’s cricket team and has played over 100 matches for the team. The 23-year-old middle-order batter has amassed 2,074 runs in 100 T20Is at an average of 30.50. The young cricketer shared her enthusiasm for the upcoming season through an Instagram post. Clad in the Indian jersey for the Paris Olympics, Rodrigues hailed the athletes who participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“Loved wearing this current Indian Olympic jersey. Can’t wait to play cricket for India at the Olympics soon!! Man, what a feeling that’d be. Also, our Indian athletes have shown tremendous passion, commitment, persistence, and grit! Win or lose, we’re proud of you,” Jemimah wrote.
Jemimah was part of the Indian women’s cricket team that won the gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games. As for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, cricket will be played in the T20 format, featuring major teams like Australia and England, beyond the sub-continent. Rodrigues, now an all-format player for India with 3 Tests and 30 ODIs to her credit, showcases her expertise in the shortest format of the game.
The Indian contingent wrapped up the 2024 Olympic Games with 6 medals in their tally. This medal haul presents the Paris Olympics as a somewhat disappointing outing for India. However, the 2028 LA Olympics is anticipated to be an improvement on the current performance, with cricket—a game where India holds great repute—being inducted into the marquee event.
