Harmanpreet Singh opens up on India's heartbreaking loss against Germany at the Paris Olympics 2024
In a recent interview, Indian men's hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh reflected upon Team India's semifinal loss to Germany in the Paris Olympics 2024. Harmanpreet exclaimed that it was an unlucky loss, even though they had several chances to score. The Harmanpreet Singh-led Indian hockey team went close to emulating India's title-winning exploits at the 1980 Moscow Olympics before being stopped by eventual silver medalists Germany in the semifinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics. The latest rise to 5th place in the FIH hockey world rankings is a result of the consecutive bronze medals won by Harmanpreet and Co. in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2024 Paris Olympics. Veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh retired after the Paris Olympics, bringing an end to an illustrious career that lasted the better part of a decade and a half.

The Indian men's hockey team came from a goal down to beat Spain 2-1 and win the bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games and gave a befitting farewell to veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh who played his last International match on Thursday, August 8. Following a successful run in his maiden Olympic campaign, skipper Harmanpreet Singh reflected upon the Indian hockey team's semifinal loss to Germany in the Paris Olympics 2024. The star India striker exclaimed that it was an unlucky loss, even though they had several chances to score.
"It (semifinal vs Germany) was a very close match. I think we created a lot of chances, but you can say we were not lucky that day and some chances were off-target. But I think the bronze medal was very important. It was the last match of the tournament and feeling very happy after winning the match," Indian men's hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh said.

Skipper Harmanpreet Singh further stated that he was content with the bronze medal finish and he felt happy after winning the match. But, he admitted that the desire to clinch the gold medal was still there with the Indian men's hockey team. The Odisha government felicitated the Paris Olympics 2024 bronze medal-winning Indian men's hockey team at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday, August 21. The felicitation ceremony commenced with an energetic parade from Biju Patnaik Airport to Kalinga Stadium, where Indian fans gathered to witness the celebration of the Indian hockey team.
"Our effort was that we should fulfil our dream (of winning gold) but somehow we were unlucky. But, still, we had the bronze medal to play for. So, went into the match with the mindset that we will win. We’ve won back-to-back medals in hockey; it’s a very big thing for us," Harmanpreet Singh added.

Indian men's hockey team skipper Harmanpreet Singh ended the Paris Olympics 2024 as the top scorer of the men's hockey event. Harmanpreet scored 10 goals as he powered India to a second-consecutive bronze medal in hockey. Almost seven of Harmanpreet’s goals came from penalty corners while the other three were scored from penalty strokes.
