The Indian contingent has opened its medal tally at the Paris Olympics thanks to a trailblazing performance by Manu Bhaker. The 19-year-old shooter clinched the bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event. Bhaker’s win has ended a 12-year-long medal drought for India in shooting. Not only that, but Bhaker has now become the first-ever Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in shooting. Meanwhile, the discipline can provide more bright spots for India, as Arjun Babuta and Ramita have advanced to the final level in their respective tournaments. On the other hand, India faced heartbreak in archery as the women’s team consisting of Deepika Kumari, Bhajan Kaur, and Ankita Bhakat lost to the Netherlands 6-0 in the quarter-finals.

India At Paris Olympics: Day 2 Round Up

Scripting another high for the contingent, men’s and women’s singles shuttlers, PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy, won their group stage matches in straight games. Sindhu handed a swift defeat to Malaysia’s Fathimath Nabaah with scores of 21-9, 21-6. Olympic debutant Prannoy followed suit, beating his German opponent, Fabian Roth, in straight games of 21-18, 21-18 within 45 minutes. However, the Indian women’s doubles pair of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa made a disappointing exit after losing their group stage match against the Korean pair of Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Yong in straight games of 21-18, 21-10.

The table tennis event witnessed Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula advancing to the next stage as they beat Anna Hursey and Christina Kallberg, respectively. However, in a disappointing turn of events, Sharath Kamal lost his opening match against Deni Kozul. Indian swimmers Dhinidhi and Srihari performed well in their respective events; however, their performances were not good enough to land them a final position. Meanwhile, Indian rower Balraj has secured his spot in the quarter-finals of the men’s tournament after finishing second in the repechage round. In tennis, Sumit Nagal went down against his French opponent despite showcasing a gritty fight.

Though India experienced some disappointments on Day 2, the bronze-winning performance by Manu Bhaker was the highlight of the day and the event for India. Moreover, India still has a lot to look forward to with the likes of Sindhu and Satwik-Chirag advancing to the next levels in their respective events. Day 3 at the Paris Olympics will see the Indian contingent competing across five disciplines, including badminton and table tennis.
