Paris Olympics 2024: PV Sindhu backs Lakshya Sen after her Round of 16 exit

Talking about India Olympics medals, star badminton player PV Sindhu and the doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty suffered shock exits from their respective badminton events at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Thursday, August 1. Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu lost to China’s He Bingjiao 21-19, 21-14, while the world No. 5 Satwik-Chirag lost 12-21, 21-14, 21-16 to the third-ranked Malaysian pair of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik. Ahead of the business end of the men's singles event, Sindhu has backed Lakshya Sen to go all the way and get the job done. Amidst all the heartbreak, Lakshya Sen, however, progressed to the quarter-finals after beating fellow Indian HS Prannoy 21-12, 21-6 in the men’s singles.

Talking about PV Sindhu's match, the world No. 13, started her match on the backfoot. She trailed 7-2 early on against the world No. 9 He Bingjiao, who was spot on with smashes which the Indian could not stop. With the scores tied at 19-19, He Bingjiao's explosive gameplay kissing the sideline made Sindhu move through the court, only for her efforts to go in vain. In the second game, the Chinese shuttler stormed to an 8-2 lead from which Sindhu could not recover. Combined with a series of errors and He Bingjiao's attacking game, the match wrapped up in a super quick time. Incidentally, PV Sindhu beat He Bingjiao at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to win a bronze medal.

"It's sad that I couldn't get the result that I wanted but at the Olympics, everybody wants to win. Unfortunately, that couldn't happen or it didn't go the right way for me. He Bing Jiao is a good player, we played a lot of times in the last year and before that as well. So we know each other's game. Overall I just felt that it's a sad day but I need to keep my head high," PV Sindhu said.

"I want him to do his best" - PV Sindhu's message for quarter-finals bound Lakshya Sen

While PV Sindhu bids adieu to the Paris Olympics 2024, Lakshya Sen is the lone torchbearer of the Indian badminton contingent. World No. 22 Lakshya Sen dominated HS Prannoy, ranked 11th, in the men’s singles pre-quarterfinals to emerge victorious in straight sets 21-12, 21-6 in 39 minutes. Talking about the Olympic India schedule, PV Sindhu had a message for the youngster ahead of the all-important quarterfinal.

"I wish him [Lakshya] all the very best and hope he does very well. It's his first Olympics so I want him to do his best and give his 100 percent," PV Sindhu added.

Lakshya Sen became only the third Indian to enter the quarter-finals of the men’s singles after Parupalli Kashyap (2012 London Olympics) and Kidambi Srikanth (2016 Rio Olympics). Playing at the La Chapelle Arena's Court 3, the prodigal shuttler edged past his fellow countrymen HS Prannoy in the pre-quarters to set up and enter the business end of the men's singles event. India's sole badminton medal contender at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, Lakshya Sen is all set to take on 12th-seeded Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei in the men’s singles quarter-finals on Friday, August 2 at 6:30 pm IST.
