You do not mess around with Novak Djokovic. On Saturday night, the Serbian tennis star showed his disgust as he boycotted an on-court interview with Channel 9 at the Australian Open. In Novak’s own words, “Made a mockery of Serbian fans and also made insulting and offensive comments towards me.”
What happened to lead to such an unprecedented situation was on Saturday Channel 9 host Tony Jones was broadcasting in front of a group of Novak supporters at the Melbourne Park. “Welcome back to Melbourne Park where you can see the Novak Djokovic fans, they are in full voice. Their chants are quote extraordinary,” Jones was heard as saying.
If that was not provocative enough, the interviewer turned around to face the fans and started needling them. “Novak, he’s overrated. Novak’s has-been. Novak, kick him out,” Tony Jones was heard sledging the fans. What followed was Novak, aiming for his 25th singles Grand Slam title winning his match against Jiri Lehecka. After the match, former World No.1 Jim Courier was supposed to conduct the on-site interview. Novak was emphatic, yet polite. “Thank you very much for being present here. I appreciate your presence and the support. I’ll see you in the next round,” said Novak before walking towards the fans to sign autographs.
People who have known Novak for very long may have been surprised by his action. He had a chat with Australian Open director Craig Tiley and started his mandatory press conference with a prepared statement. “I would like to clarify the reason why the interview was not conducted,” said Novak. What followed was a long explanation as to why Novak Djokoovic has been humiliated and treated with contempt. This is not the first time for sure.
A day before the Australian Open began, Novak Djokovic had talked of how his food was poisoned when he was in detention three years ago before he was deported. It did shock millions of tennis fans and Novak revealed when he flew back to Serbia and took ill, he underwent many tests. It showed he had been fed stuff high on heavy metals laced with lead. At the same time, Novak was also very clear when he said his boycott of the onsite interview this year was not a personal thing. He said he had nothing against Jim Courier but wanted an apology from Channel 9.
The year after Novak returned to the Australian Open, in 2023, Novak was targeted again. At that time, his father Srdjan Djokovic was dragged into the Russia versus Ukraine war. Srdjan was forced into a controversy which upset Novak. This was just the tip of the iceberg. Fans inside the Rod Laver Arena and other show courts at the Australian Open have baited the Serbian star. His fault, he was winning non-stop. The year gone by was an aberration when in 2024 he did not win a single Grand Slam title. All he had to show was the gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Just to jog the fans’ memory, last year when Novak was put through crazy schedules at the French Open in matches going as late as 2am Paris time, he had slipped and hurt his knee. He underwent surgery for a torn meniscus. However, the comeback he staged and presented himself as a contender for The Championships at Wimbledon was amazing. He competed hard before losing to Carlos Alcaraz. Novak then returned to the same venue in Paris, Roland Garros, where he eventually won the gold medal on the brick-red Parisian clay. It was an emotional win for Novak, where he wept with his family.
In 2025, Novak is trying hard to win more matches, more tournaments and peak at the Grand Slams. That is why he has hired Sir Andy Murray as his coach. It is still early days but Novak trusts the methods of Murray a lot. The Serbian does not needle anyone, so if he had to teach a lesson to Channel 9, it was done from the heart. The tennis icon loves Serbia and will not tolerate his fans and citizens being mocked at.
