The women's singles event has found its last eight at the 2025 Australian Open. Second-seeded Iga Swiatek secured an easy win over lucky loser Eva Lys to claim a spot in the quarterfinals. The match-ups were completed when Emma Navarro defeated Daria Kasatkina in the final Round of 16 clash in Melbourne. Swiatek will now face Navarro on Wednesday to compete for a semi-final spot in the Australian Open. Meanwhile, the 2025 Australian Open marks the tenth Grand Slam quarter-final appearance for Iga Swiatek. Top seeds like Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka have all secured their places in the final eight, but Elena Rybakina did not make the cut. The sixth-seeded WTA contender suffered an upset at the hands of Madison Keys, who defeated Rybakina 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 at the Margaret Court Arena in their fourth-round encounter.

Iga Swiatek brushes past Eva Lys as Emma Navarro fends off Daria Kasatkina to set-up Australian Open quarter-final clash

Iga Swiatek faced Eva Lys in the fourth-round match at the Rod Laver Arena on Monday. The contest posed no challenge for the Polish star as she claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory in just 59 minutes. The second-seeded player is yet to drop a set in Melbourne as she reached the tenth Grand Slam quarter-final of her career. Eva Lys walked into the record books as she became the first lucky loser to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open following her victory against Jaqueline Cristian. However, the 22-year-old was no match for the 5-time Grand Slam champion at the Rod Laver Arena.

Swiatek hit 28 winners against the German seed, who managed just seven. Moreover, Swiatek has lost only 11 games across the four matches in this edition of the Australian Open, seven of which she dropped in the first-round clash against Katerina Siniakova. The first set against Lys lasted just 24 minutes, as Lys failed to win a single game. Lys' only point of success came at 40-30 against the Polish player, but the match ultimately ended with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 scoreline in the night clash.

“Great, that was my first night session and I’m glad I have the chance to play on Rod Laver Arena,” Swiatek said. “I enjoyed it, which is the most important thing. I’m still 23, so there’s a lot to improve. I don’t feel I’m at my peak. But these matches give me a lot of confidence. “We don’t know what’s going to happen in the future, maybe I’ll be better. I’m so glad I was able to play my game ... I’m feeling really comfortable and we’re going well," she added.

Meanwhile, Emma Navarro faced Daria Kasatkina at the John Cain Arena, competing for the final spot in the quarter-finals at the Australian Open. While it was Navarro's first Round of 16 appearance at the Australian Open, the American defeated Kasatkina to secure her third consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final. The matchup was anticipated to be a thrilling contest as it featured two Top 10 WTA players battling it out in Melbourne. Navarro started strong, racing to a 4-0 lead before Kasatkina clawed her way back to level the set at 5-4. However, a series of three unforced errors handed Navarro the opening set.

In the second set, Navarro maintained her relentless approach as Kasatkina frequently secured a break advantage, only for Navarro to level the score each time. On her serve, Kasatkina fended off three match points to hold at 5-5 and then snatched the set, pushing Navarro into her fourth consecutive three-setter of the tournament.

The final set unfolded as a tense back-and-forth struggle. In a pivotal moment, Kasatkina saved seven break points in a marathon game to make it 4-4. But Navarro, showing resilience of her own, saved a break point at 5-5 by winning the match's longest rally, a grueling 27-shot exchange capped with a sharp-angled backhand winner. Embracing an aggressive approach in the final moments, Navarro broke Kasatkina for the ninth time, clinching a hard-fought victory in 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Meanwhile, the quarter-final match-ups at the 2025 Australian Open feature the top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Additionally, Coco Gauff will face Paula Badosa at the Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday. Wednesday's face-offs include Swiatek vs Navarro and Elina Svitolina against Madison Keys, who defeated the sixth-seeded Elena Rybakina in their fourth-round clash on Monday.
