The first Grand Slam of the season is swiftly nearing its ultimate showdown, with top seeds racing towards the high-stakes finale. The women's singles tournament in Melbourne has identified its final four contenders. After best friends off the court, Aryna Sabalenka and Paula Badosa secured their spots, the second set of quarter-finals saw Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys advance further in the race. Iga Swiatek faced Emma Navarro in the final-eight clash, emerging victorious with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 win. Meanwhile, American seed Madison Keys faced off against Elina Svitolina, edging past the Ukrainian 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the Rod Laver Arena.
Iga Swiatek clinches yet another straight set victory to cruise into the Australian Open semi-final
In her quarter-final against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, top-seed Aryna Sabalenka dropped her first set in Melbourne since the 2023 Australian Open final. Iga Swiatek, meanwhile, is yet to lose a set in the ongoing edition, having reached the penultimate stage. The end of 2024 brought unprecedented challenges for the Polish ace. After being named in a doping violation case and facing a month-long provisional suspension from the WTA Tour, Iga Swiatek lost the World No.1 ranking to Aryna Sabalenka. However, with her suspension concluding during the off-season, Swiatek is back in full form, ready to take on the 2025 season. The 23-year-old began her campaign at the United Cup, where she led Poland to the finals before losing her singles clash to eventual champion Coco Gauff of the USA.
At the Australian Open, second-seeded Swiatek opened her campaign against Katerina Siniakova before cruising past Rebecca Sramkova, Emma Raducanu, and Eva Lys with commanding straight-set victories. Emma Navarro, meanwhile, overcame Daria Kasatkina in the fourth round to earn her third chance at a Grand Slam quarter-final. Swiatek has delivered some notably swift victories in the tournament, with her fourth-round match against lucky loser Eva Lys lasting just 59 minutes. Although Emma Navarro posed some resistance, it was nothing insurmountable for the Pole, who wrapped up the quarter-final in 89 minutes at the Rod Laver Arena.
The Australian Open quarter-final marked Swiatek's 10th Grand Slam quarter-final appearance. Her upcoming semi-final will be her seventh at this stage, making her the youngest WTA player to reach seven Grand Slam semi-finals since Maria Sharapova in 2006. In a remarkable display of dominance, Swiatek has not lost more than two games in a set since her opening-round clash against Katerina Siniakova. Overall, the 23-year-old has dropped just 14 games across her five matches in the tournament so far.
"Honestly, I wasn't going so deep in Grand Slams so much except Roland Garros," Swiatek said after her win against Navarro. "For sure now I'm happy that I'm kind of playing my level here. Last year my journey here finished at the fourth and third round, so for sure I feel more confident now."
Australian Open semi-finals: Aryna Sabalenka vs Paula Badosa, Iga Swiatek vs Madison Keys
In another quarter-final, 19th-seeded Madison Keys defeated Elina Svitolina 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Keys had reached the quarter-finals by upsetting sixth-seeded Elena Rybakina. Her latest victory puts Keys into the seventh Grand Slam semi-final of her career and her third in Australia. Svitolina was not a new opponent for Keys, who held a 3-2 head-to-head record against the Ukrainian. Despite losing the first set, Keys turned the match around to improve her record to 4-2, securing her spot among the last four contenders in the Australian Open. Madison Keys will now face Iga Swiatek in the semi-final.
"I'm really, really proud of myself to be in another semi-final here and kind of hoping and looking forward to seeing if I can make it one step further," Keys said following her victory.
When Swiatek meets Keys in the semi-final, she will already know who her potential final opponent is, should she get past Keys. The Sabalenka and Badosa clash is scheduled earlier than Swiatek's semi-final. If both Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka manage to overcome their respective opponents, a thrilling battle between the Top 2 WTA stars will be set for the championship match. Moreover, Swiatek has the chance to reclaim the World No. 1 ranking from the Belarusian if she halts Sabalenka's bid to defend her Australian Open trophy and complete a historic three-peat in Melbourne.
