The 2025 season looks promising for Simona Halep, who is making her way back into the sport after being subjected to a doping ban by the WTA Tour. The former World No. 1 will begin her comeback season in Melbourne at the Australian Open. The two-time Grand Slam champion has received a qualifying wildcard for the prestigious event. Halep fought against a four-year doping ban after testing positive for roxadustat in October 2022. Although she successfully reduced the ban's duration, the former Roland Garros champion dropped significantly in the WTA Rankings. However, the seasoned player remains optimistic about turning her standing around as she returns to the game with full intensity.
Australia Open awards qualifying wildcard to former World No.1 Simona Halep
The last few years have been exceptionally challenging for Simona Halep. Once ranked World No. 1 in the WTA Rankings, the Romanian has now dropped to 883rd in the standings. During the 2022 US Open, Halep tested positive for roxadustat, a banned doping substance known to increase the number of red blood cells in circulation. In October of the same year, a provisional ban was imposed on her, initially set to last until October 2026. However, Halep appealed the charges at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), maintaining her innocence throughout the process. Ultimately, CAS reduced her suspension to nine months in a ruling delivered earlier this year.
The 33-year-old returned to the Tour at the Miami Open earlier this year. However, knee injury limited her participation at further events. The 2024 season concluded for Simona with a 1-5 win/loss record as she clinched a sole victory at at the WTA 125 event in Hong Kong against Arina Rodionova. However, the former World No.1 seems to have put the injury concern aside as he expressed her excitement for playing in Melbourne.
On Wednesday, the Australian Open announced via X that Halep, the 2018 French Open champion, would participate in the tournament’s qualifying rounds in January. The Australian Open revealed that Halep has been granted a wildcard entry into the qualifying stage, where she will need to secure three victories to earn a spot in the main draw. Reflecting on her return to the Australian Open, where she finished as runner-up in 2018, Halep described the opportunity as “exciting.”
“The thought of returning to Australia after three years is exciting and I’m very grateful to the tournament for this opportunity. I have been working hard to get ready for the 2025 season," Halep said. The Australian Open has provided me with some of the best moments in my career, so I can’t wait to be back in Melbourne and playing in front of the Aussie fans,” she added.
The former top-ranked ace on the WTA Standings, Halep boasts an impressive run at the Australian Open. The Romanian ended up as the runner-up in 2018 before reaching three quarterfinals and the semi-final in 2020 at the Grand Slam event.
