The Greatest Rivalry: India vs Pakistan

India vs Pakistan rivalry captured in all its glory in the latest Netflix documentary

The Greatest Rivalry: India vs Pakistan - Netflix

The game of cricket enthralls the masses with multiple aspects, with the rivalry between two teams being the most exciting one. There have been constant debates about which rivalry is termed the 'greatest' in the game, with the Ashes ranked higher among others. The Test face-off between England and Australia, dating back to the early days of cricket, is unarguably worth the attention it gets. However, when it comes to the subcontinent, nothing beats the heated clash between the neighboring players, India and Pakistan. The streaming giant Netflix, meanwhile, identified the potential a project would hold if it captured the essence of this intense rivalry. Thus, "The Greatest Rivalry: India vs Pakistan" hit our screens on February 7.

Facing off since 1952, the India vs Pakistan clash has scripted many moments that define their rivalry. Picture two teams, coming from nations that have been constantly at loggerheads, with political tensions always at their peak, battling it out in a game that is a favorite across borders. Obviously, the nerves are bound to run high in such fixtures, further intensified by the fact that both India and Pakistan have players ranked among the cricketing elite, often emerging as legends of the game. Over the years, their interactions have become limited, but the intensity remains the same, with even the players admitting that the rivalry fuels the pressure on them to perform in the India vs Pakistan clash.

A catch or a drop: Does "The Greatest Rivalry: India vs Pakistan" deliver on emotions?

Netflix, however, chose to keep it short when taking up the project to showcase the India vs Pakistan rivalry. Scheduled right ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy, expectations were high for the documentary to deliver on the emotions associated with this historic clash. However, the documentary mainly focuses on the teams' interactions from 1999 to 2008, with a special emphasis on the 2004 tour. A key element missing from the documentary is the "heat" itself, something that is anticipated in the highest amounts when India vs Pakistan is the central plot. A good attempt, one might say, but the final product leaves plenty unsatisfied. The documentary features re-enactments of many monumental moments, with the likes of Virender Sehwag, Sourav Ganguly, and Shoaib Akhtar adding their insights.

However, a documentary that highlights the 2004 tour, infamous for Rahul Dravid declaring the innings in Multan just before Sachin Tendulkar could reach a double ton, ironically omits that very incident. Notably absent was Tendulkar himself. Bright spots included Sehwag explaining the scenarios as he took on Imam-ul-Haq and Ganguly bringing Hindi into the conversation while describing what transpired during the highly charged 2004 India vs Pakistan series. For Pakistan, Shoaib Akhtar, with heartfelt emotions, brought sentiments to the surface with his narration. Moreover, scenes from the tour off the field, such as the players in the hotel lobby, add a touch of behind-the-scenes insights from that time, something the audience never had access to before.

Overall, the three-episode docuseries serves the purpose of stirring nostalgia among millennials. However, while nostalgia is evident, the documentary does not necessarily play on the "thrilling" tones of the India vs Pakistan rivalry. For the younger generation, arguably the primary target audience of streaming platforms, it provides a glimpse into what the India vs Pakistan series was like before their interactions were limited to ICC events, amid ongoing debates that the rivalry is now merely a revenue-generating opportunity for the respective cricket boards.

Additionally, the three episodes are not stretched to the point of boredom, making it a good pick for cricket fanatics looking to revisit the past through this Netflix project. If "The Greatest Rivalry: India vs Pakistan" falls short of evoking the full spectrum of emotions, the real India vs Pakistan battle is set for February 23 in Dubai, as the teams clash in the league-stage match of the ICC Champions Trophy.
