The ongoing 9th edition of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 has seen a lot of surprises and exciting performances from the 20 teams participating in the star-studded event. However, while considering the history of the T20I mega event, only West Indies and England are the two teams to have won the T20 World Cup as many as two times. Interestingly, under the captaincy of Daren Sammy, West Indies won both of their T20 World Cup tournaments in 2012 and 2016 hosted in Sri Lanka and India respectively. On the other hand, England managed to clinch the 2010 and 2022 T20 World Cup titles played in West Indies and Australia respectively. Incidentally, Team India were the winners in the inaugural edition of the ICC T20 World Cup 2007 hosted in South Africa. In the first-ever event of its kind, the Men in Blue managed to register an incredible victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in the finals played at the iconic Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. India's legendary captain MS Dhoni was given the responsibility to lead the national team at the biggest stage for the first time and he did not disappoint the millions of Indian cricket fans all across the globe. During this competition, India went on to beat Pakistan in the staggering Bowl-out finish in the opening round and also got the better of hosts South Africa in the group stage. The MS Dhoni-led side also defeated Australia in the semi-finals to qualify for the final.
In 2007, Pakistan may have failed to win the prestigious title as they finished runners-up, losing the final against arch-rivals India. However, Pakistan fought back really well to register an impressive 8-wicket win against Sri Lanka to be crowned as the 2009 T20 World Cup champions. The 1992 ODI World Cup winners won their first-ever T20 World Cup title in 2009 under the captaincy of Younis Khan. Pakistan defeated New Zealand in the group stage and then went on to clinch an incredible win over South Africa in the semi-final of the 2009 World T20.
The defending champions in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, England, won their first-ever ICC trophy in 2010 when they defeated Australia in the finals of T20 World Cup, a tournament that was hosted in the West Indies. England managed to beat New Zealand in the group stage of the T20I competition and then picked up a remarkable win over Sri Lanka in the semi-final. Paul Collingwood was the England captain in the 2010 T20 World Cup.
West Indies won their first T20 World Cup title in 2012 when they defeated hosts Sri Lanka by 36 runs in the final of the competition. Daren Sammy captained the team really well throughout the tournament while former cricketer Marlon Samuels was the star performer with the bat. West Indies registered an astounding 74-run victory against Australia in the semi-final.
After finishing as the runners-up both in 2009 and 2012, Sri Lanka finally managed to get their hands on the prestigious ICC T20 World Cup trophy in 2014 where they got the better of India in the final hosted in Bangladesh. Lanka's legendary duo of Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara got the perfect farewell in the mega event. Interestingly, it was speedster Lasith Malinga who captained Sri Lanka to a fabulous win over favourites India in the finals after both these teams finished at the top position in their respective groups on the World Cup points table.
The Indian bowlers suffered yet another heartbreak in the semi-finals of the 2016 T20 World Cup at home, having suffered a disappointing loss at the hands of West Indies. It was once again the West Indies team that emerged as the winners of 2016 World T20 where they defeated England in the finals. Carlos Brathwaite smashed four brilliant consecutive sixes in the final over to seal a fantastic finish at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
After winning as many as five ODI World Cup trophies, Australia went on to win their first-ever T20 World Cup trophy in 2021 when they defeated New Zealand in the final. Incidentally, Australia also finished as the runners-up in the 2010 edition of the T20I tournament. On the other hand, England got the better of Pakistan in the final of the 2022 T20 World Cup at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
While talking about the ongoing 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup being hosted jointly in the West Indies and United States of America, the likes of India, Australia, South Africa and West Indies have already qualified for the Super 8 stage of the competition. Australia and India are being considered as the major contenders.
