Pakistan are once again ready to take the field this time against Canada in the 22nd encounter of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 scheduled to begin on 11 June, 2024 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. Interestingly, both these sides are coming into this match after facing quite contrasting results unfold in their respective previous outings during this competition so far. Pakistan have already faced two disappointing back-to-back defeats at the hands of arch-rivals India and co-hosts USA in the ongoing edition of the mega event. On the other hand, Canada picked up an incredible 12-run win over Ireland in their most recent outing. Pakistan vs Canada will be an important game in the context of Group A that also includes India, USA and Ireland.
This will be just the second T20I match between Pakistan and Canada as their first-ever T20I battle took place a long way back in 2008. During the T20 Canada tournament in King City, Ontario, Pakistan managed to get the better of Canada. However, both these teams have faced each other twice in the 50-overs format of the game and Pakistan have ended up winning both of these matches.
Pakistan have not had the best of performances so far in the ongoing edition of 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup where they have suffered two disappointing consecutive losses against USA and India. The Babar Azam-led team came into this T20I tournament on the back of a poor 0-2 series loss suffered at the hands of England. Pakistan also witnessed a defeat against Ireland recently. However, after playing the semi-finals in the 2021 T20 World Cup and finishing as the runners-up in the T20 World Cup 2022, Pakistan entered this edition of the mega event as one of the major title winning contenders, but their dreams suddenly have diminished to a great extent. Their pace bowling has performed impressively in both the games barring Mohammad Amir's expensive Super Over against USA. However, it is their batting department which has been really below-par in this tournament.
While talking about the qualification scenarios in this T20 World Cup 2024, Pakistan will now have to beat both Canada and Ireland in their remaining two games by big margins. On the other hand, USA have already won their first two matches against Canada, Pakistan and thus, they have a good chance of qualifying for the Super 8 stage of the competition. The Pakistan team will surely be hoping to make a strong comeback both in the batting as well as bowling departments.
On the other hand, Canada definitely puched above their weight to register their first-ever win in the T20 World Cup history against Ireland at the very same venue. Canada did not had the best of starts in this ongoing tournament as they suffered a poor loss at the hands of co-hosts USA. However, the remaining two games for Canada are extremely challenging as they have to face Pakistan and India. They have some quality cricketers in their ranks like Nicholas Kirton, Navneet Dhaliwal, Dillon Heyliger and Aaron Johnson.
