The ongoing edition of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 has currently reached its business end where both South Africa and defending champions England have already qualified for the semi-finals. India are the only unbeaten team so far in the T20I mega event having registered five spectacular victories over Ireland, Pakistan, United States of America (USA), Afghanistan and Bangladesh. The Men in Blue have almost booked a place in the semis and the assurance will come if they are able to beat Australia during their final Super 8 clash scheduled to take place on 24 June, 2024 at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia. However, the major target for the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team is to win the T20 World Cup 2024.
Will India Win The T20 World Cup 2024?
Team India definitely has a lot of holes to plug in if they want to stand a chance to win this edition of the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. The 2007 winners need to take advantage in the first six overs of the powerplay which they are currently lacking in this tournament so far. The Indian team management took a really big call when they decided to open the batting with the senior duo of skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. This also meant that left-handed explosive batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal had to sit out of the playing XI. Rohit scored a fine half-century in the opening match against Ireland, but Kohli failed to get going.
Virat Kohli failed to get into double digits in the first three matches of this T20I tournament against Ireland, Pakistan and United States of America. In the big games, India will have to score heavily in the first six overs of the powerplay and for that both Kohli and Rohit will have to go all guns blazing from the word go. In the middle-order department, left-handed swashbuckling wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant has played a lot of impactful innings in this competition, but he has failed to convert any of them into a big knock. While batting at the No. 3 position, the southpaw batter will surely be hoping to deliver at the biggest stage in the upcoming games especially if India qualifies for the World Cup final.
Suryakumar Yadav has scored as many as two half-centuries in this T20 World Cup 2024. The explosive middle-order batsman smashed a blistering knock of 53 runs off just 28 deliveries that included 5 fours and 3 sixes in the game against Afghanistan during the Super 8 stage of the competition. His first fifty came against United States of America in a tricky run-chase. India's decision to back Shivam Dube in the lower middle-order has not been the best one so far, however, the left-hander has made some crucial contributions in the match against USA and Bangladesh. But, Dube will surely want to raise his game and play one big innings during the upcoming important matches in this tournament.
Just before the start of the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, seam bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya was touted as India's X-Factor and he has delivered in the similar fashion contributing impressively well both in the batting as well as bowling departments. During the recently concluded encounter against Bangladesh, the aggressive right-hander notched up a fantastic unbeaten half-century off just 27 deliveries that consisted of 4 fours and 3 sixes. He also picked up a crucial wicket with the ball and also became the first Indian batsman to score a fifty in the T20 World Cup while batting at No. 6.
In the spin bowling department, left-arm spinner Axar Patel has bowled really well and picked wickets at regular intervals. However, spin bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has failed to contribute much both with the bat and ball. The Indian team management will surely be hoping that Jadeja bring his years of experience into play during the upcoming important matches in this competition. While looking at the pitch and conditions in the West Indies, India decided to drop fast bowler Mohammed Siraj in order to include left-arm legspinner Kuldeep Yadav who looked in a stunning form during the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) season. Kuldeep also ended up taking three wickets in the game against Bangladesh.
On the other hand, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been superb for the Indian team in this 2024 T20 World Cup, being the match-winner in the bowling department. Bumrah has twice been awarded as the Man of the Match and he has taken a total of 10 wickets from 5 games. Left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh also picked up a brilliant four-wicket haul in the match against USA.
